Artificial intelligence is often discussed through polarized narratives, either as humanity’s greatest achievement or as an existential threat. However, the core issue is not whether machines will surpass humans, but whether humanity has failed to reconstruct its self-image during the transition from modern Western scientific civilization to informational civilization. In this sense, civilizational resilience in the informational era depends on the capacity to reconstruct the human self-image in response to technological transformation, rather than technological stability alone. Since the Scientific Revolution, modern Western civilization has been grounded in a human-centered self-image in which humans are understood as rational subjects capable of understanding, controlling, and designing the natural world. However, the rapid advancement of AI destabilizes this assumption and generates uncertainty about what it means to be human. AI should not be understood as an autonomous technological entity, but as an outcome of informational civilization—a planetary-scale system built upon Internet infrastructures, digital technologies, and layered human agreements and institutional coordination. Even if AI appears autonomous, it operates within accumulated structures of human design and collective agreement. As the sphere of human design expands to cognitive and planetary scales, a new human self-image becomes necessary. Thus, the deeper issue surrounding AI is the destabilization of human identity within informational civilization, rather than a purely technological crisis. The maturation of informational civilization, therefore, requires the reconstruction of the human self-image, enabling a more deliberate understanding of how AI can be positioned as an instrument within human-directed civilizational design. This transition may also reveal that diverse civilizational understandings of humanity can provide important insights for navigating the informational civilization.

This presentation explores the transition from Western scientific civilization to an emerging information civilization through comparative civilizational studies with a focus on science and nation. The shared development of cyberspace marks a significant turning point in human civilization. Information technologies enabled a shift from a state-centered, physics-based scientific paradigm to a transnational, collective intellectual space. Western scientific civilization, grounded in physics, expanded alongside the growth of Western nation-states. In contrast, information civilization is advancing through developments in information science and the global expansion of cyberspace. A key feature of the late stage of Western scientific civilization is the rise of Big Science, where large-scale, state-funded research reflects the deep entanglement of science with the demonstration of national power, especially in nuclear physics. In contrast, information civilization transcends national borders, sharing a unified cyberspace with people worldwide. While digitalization and globalization are often said to provoke division and conflict, such fragmentation contradicts the original design philosophy of the Internet and the World Wide Web, which was based on principles of integration and connectivity. The Internet provided the globally unique information space that transcended national boundaries. The Web structured this space through hyperlinks and hypertext, allowing dynamic access to vast stores of knowledge. This architecture laid the foundation for today’s digital society.Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web at CERN, a hallmark of Big Science. While initially intended to link fragmented experimental data across nations, he envisioned a universal information space that transcends institutional and national boundaries, reconnecting humanity and forming the core of a new civilization rooted in cyberspace. Keio University has played a vital role as Asia’s hub in this global transition from the Western-centric civilization to the global and information society, contributing significantly to the truly international evolution of the Internet and the World Wide Web.
