概要

Collections of printed books have been developed and maintained for centuries, but ordinary readers’

responses to books have rarely been documented in a systematic way. As a consequence, we know very

little about what people think and feel while reading, and about the impact that books have on them.

However, in the 21st century, there is a wealth of data coming from digital platforms used for reading or

posting book reviews that offer an unprecedented insight into the lives of readers. In this presentation, by comparing various platforms and languages, I show what online comments and book reviews can tell us about how teenagers read and what impact fiction has on their lives. I use computational methods

that allow me to extend the analysis to thousands of comments and reviews, revealing general patterns

and differences across platforms, reading communities, languages, and cultures.

印刷された書籍のコレクションは何世紀にもわたって発展・維持されてきましたが、一般読者の書籍に対する反応が体系的に記録されることはほとんどありませんでした。その結果、人々が読書中に何を考え、何を感じているのか、そして本が彼らにどのような影響を与えているのかについて、私たちはほとんど知ることはなかったのです。しかし、21世紀になり、読者の生活についてこれまでになかったような洞察をもたらしてくれる膨大なデータが、読書や書評の投稿に使用されるデジタルプラットフォームから得られるようになりました。本講演では、さまざまなプラットフォームや言語を比較しながら、オンライン上のコメントや書評が、10代の若者の読書のあり方や、フィクションが彼らの人生に与える影響について何を明らかにできるのかを示します。さらに、数千件に及ぶコメントや書評を分析するための計算機的手法を用いることで、プラットフォーム、読書コミュニティ、言語、文化の違いを超えた一般的なパターンを明らかにします。

略歴:

Federico Pianzola is Assistant Professor of Computational Humanities at the University of Groningen

(Netherlands), where he coordinates the Master’s in Digital Humanities. He is the Principal Investigator

of the ERC Starting Grant project GOLEM (Graphs and Ontologies for Literary Evolution Models) and

previously completed a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Global Fellowship at the University of Milan-Bicocca

(Italy) and Sogang University (South Korea). He is member of the scientific advisory board of OPERAS

(the Research Infrastructure supporting open scholarly communication in the social sciences and

humanities in the European Research Area) and president of the International Society of the Empirical

Study of Literature (IGEL). He is also managing editor of the journal Scientific Study of Literature and he

is on the editorial board of two other journals: the Journal of Computational Literary Studies and the

Journal of Cultural Analytics.

His most recent book Digital Social Reading: Sharing Fiction in the 21st Century has been published by MIT Press in January 2025.

Federico Pianzolaは、オランダ・フローニンゲン大学の計算人文学助教授であり、同大学のデジタル・ヒューマニティーズ修士課程のコーディネーターを務めています。彼は、ERC（欧州研究会議）Starting Grant プロジェクト GOLEM（Graphs and Ontologies for Literary Evolution Models）の主任研究者であり、以前はマリー・スクウォドフスカ＝キュリー国際フェローシップを受け、ミラノ・ビコッカ大学（イタリア）および西江（ソガン）大学（韓国）で研究を行いました。また、彼はOPERAS（欧州社会科学・人文学研究のオープンな学術コミュニケーションを支援する研究基盤）の科学諮問委員会のメンバーであり、国際文学経験研究学会（IGEL）の会長を務めています。さらに、学術誌Scientific Study of Literatureの編集責任者を務めるほか、Journal of Computational Literary Studies および Journal of Cultural Analyticsの編集委員でもあります。彼の最新の著書 『Digital Social Reading: Sharing Fiction in the 21st Century』 は、2025年1月にMIT Pressから出版されました。
