The demand for high-speed and highly efficient optical communication techniques has been rapidly growing due to the ever-increasing volume of data traffic. As well as the digital coherent communication used for core and metro networks, intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD) are still promising schemes in intra/inter data centers thanks to their low latency, high reliability, and good cost performance. In this work, we study a microresonator-based frequency comb as a potential light source for future IM-DD optical systems where applications may include replacing individual stabilized lasers with a continuous laser driven microresonator. Regarding comb line powers and spectral intervals, we compare a modulation instability comb and a soliton microcomb and provide a quantitative analysis with regard to telecom applications. Our experimental demonstration achieved a forward error correction (FEC) free operation of bit-error rate (BER) <10−9 with a 1.45 Tbps capacity using a total of 145 lines over the entire C-band and revealed the possibility of soliton microcomb-based ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) with a simple, cost-effective IM-DD scheme, with a view to future practical use in data centers.

Optical microcavity, which can localize light at a certain spot for a short period of time, has a wide range of applications, such as optical signal processing and optical frequency combs. Single crystal CaF2 has excellent optical properties and many research on the manufacturing process to create a microcavity has been done. However, due to its unstable thermal conditions, stable oscillation of Kerr comb could not be done. Single crystal MgF2, which also has excellent optical properties, has stable thermal conditions suitable to create a microcavity. Like CaF2, MgF2 microcavity can only be manufactured by ultra-precision cylindrical turning, yet its appropriate processing conditions is not known. In this study, a method to derive the critical depth of cut theoretically in ductile mode machining was proposed in consideration of specific cutting energy, mechanical properties and slip system of workpiece, and tool geometry. The critical depth of cut calculated by the proposed method roughly agreed with the experimental value on the MgF2 plane. Unlike CaF2, MgF2 has an optical anisotropy; therefore, in order to create a microcavity where the refractive angle is constant, the resonance part needs to be made on a cylinder with (001) plane as end face. Therefore, a microcavity was fabricated according to the critical depth of cut on a cylinder with (001) as end face derived from the proposed method, and the surface integrity was evaluated from the viewpoint of microcavity performance.

Microresonator-based optical frequency combs emitted from high-quality-factor microresonators, also known as microcombs, have opened up new horizons to areas of optical frequency comb technology including frequency metrology, precision sensing, and optical communication. To extend the capability of microcombs for such applications, large and reliable tunability is of critical importance. Here, we show broad spectral tuning of Kerr soliton microcombs in a thermally controlled crystalline microresonator with pump-detuning stabilization. The fundamental elements composing frequency combs, namely the center frequency, repetition frequency, and carrier-envelope offset frequency, are spectrally tuned by up to −48.8 GHz, −5.85 MHz, and −386 MHz, respectively, leveraging thermal effects in ultrahigh-Q crystalline magnesium fluoride resonators. We further demonstrate a 3.4-fold enhancement of soliton comb power resulting from thermal expansion with a temperature change of only 28 K by employing quantitative analyses of the fiber-to-resonator coupling efficiency.

Defect functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by chemical modification is a promising strategy for near-infrared photoluminescence (NIR PL) generation at >1000 nm, which has advanced telecom and bio/medical applications. The covalent attachment of molecular reagents generates sp3-carbon defects in the sp2-carbon lattice of SWCNTs with bright red-shifted PL generation. Although the positional difference between proximal sp3-carbon defects, labeled as the defect binding configuration, can dominate NIR PL properties, the defect arrangement chemistry remains unexplored. Here, aryldiazonium reagents with π-conjugated ortho-substituents (phenyl and acetylene groups) were developed to introduce molecular interactions with nanotube sidewalls into the defect-formation chemical reaction. The functionalized chiral SWCNTs selectively emitted single defect PL in the wavelength range of ∼1230-1270 nm for (6,5) tubes, indicating the formation of an atypical binding configuration, different from those exhibited by typical aryl- or alkyl-functionalized chiral tubes emitting ∼1150 nm PL. Moreover, the acetylene-based substituent design enabled PL brightening and a subsequent molecular modification of the doped sites using click chemistry.

Nanomaterials exhibit unique optical phenomena, in particular excitonic quantum processes occurring at room temperature. The low dimensionality, however, imposes strict requirements for conventional optical excitation, and an approach for bypassing such restrictions is desirable. Here we report on exciton transfer in carbon-nanotube/tungsten-diselenide heterostructures, where band alignment can be systematically varied. The mixed-dimensional heterostructures display a pronounced exciton reservoir effect where the longer-lifetime excitons within the two-dimensional semiconductor are funneled into carbon nanotubes through diffusion. This new excitation pathway presents several advantages, including larger absorption areas, broadband spectral response, and polarization-independent efficiency. When band alignment is resonant, we observe substantially more efficient excitation via tungsten diselenide compared to direct excitation of the nanotube. We further demonstrate simultaneous bright emission from an array of carbon nanotubes with varied chiralities and orientations. Our findings show the potential of mixed-dimensional heterostructures and band alignment engineering for energy harvesting and quantum applications through exciton manipulation.

The development of van der Waals heterostructures has introduced unconventional phenomena that emerge at atomically precise interfaces. For example, interlayer excitons in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides show intriguing optical properties at low temperatures. Here we report on room-temperature observation of interface excitons in mixed-dimensional heterostructures consisting of two-dimensional tungsten diselenide and one-dimensional carbon nanotubes. Bright emission peaks originating from the interface are identified, spanning a broad energy range within the telecommunication wavelengths. The effect of band alignment is investigated by systematically varying the nanotube bandgap, and we assign the new peaks to interface excitons as they only appear in type-II heterostructures. Room-temperature localization of low-energy interface excitons is indicated by extended lifetimes as well as small excitation saturation powers, and photon correlation measurements confirm antibunching. With mixed-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures where band alignment can be engineered, new opportunities for quantum photonics are envisioned.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are increasingly being adopted in hybrid photonics via integration with photonic structures, including cavities. The utility of 2D materials for dielectric environment engineering in hybrid nanophotonic devices remains largely unexplored. We demonstrate self-aligned hybrid nanocavities in which 2D material flakes are used to form cavities locally wherever they are placed along the PhC waveguide postfabrication. We successfully fabricated such hybrid nanocavities with various 2D materials on silicon PhC waveguides, obtaining Q factors as high as 4.0 × 105. Remarkably, even monolayer flakes can provide sufficient local refractive index modulation to induce high Q nanocavity formation. We have also observed cavity PL enhancement in a self-aligned MoTe2 cavity device with an enhancement factor of about 15. Our results highlight the prospect of using such 2D material-induced PhC nanocavities to realize a wide range of photonic components for hybrid integrated photonic circuits.

Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) coupled to magnons have attracted much attention because they allow for the long-range transport of magnetic information that cannot be achieved by magnon alone. We employed pulsed laser interferometry to visualize the entire spatiotemporal dynamics of a SAW that travels on a nickel (Ni) thin film and is coupled to magnons. It was possible to trace the coupling-induced amplitude reduction and phase shift that occurs as the SAW propagates over a distance of 0.4 mm. The observed changes are consistent with results obtained from conventional radio-frequency transmission measurements, which probe the total SAW absorption due to magnon-phonon coupling. This result verifies that our method can accurately capture the spatiotemporal dynamics of a SAW coupled to magnons across the entire length of the sample. Additionally, we validated our time-resolved profiles by comparing them with theoretical results that take the echo wave due to reflection into account. The impact of the echo wave is significant even when it has propagated over a distance of the order of millimeters. Our imaging results highlight the visualization of the long-range propagation of the SAW coupled to magnons and offer more information about the surface vibration profiles in such devices.

We investigated the stability and mutual coherence of a Raman microcomb in a silica microrod resonator by monitoring the output power and longitudinal mode spacings. The results indicate that we can obtain a stable Raman comb formation without the need for four-wave mixing processes. The use of a Raman comb will open the possibility of simplifying the setup because it will relax the phase matching condition usually required for microresonator frequency comb generation. Although there are some restrictions in regard to using a Raman comb for applications due to the coexistence of the comb components in different mode families, a proof-of-concept demonstration shows that it is sufficiently stable and robust for applications such as optical communications.

We explore the synchronization of chaotic microresonator frequency combs, emphasizing the modulation instability state, which is known for its inherent chaotic behaviors. Our study confirms that the synchronization of two such combs is feasible by injecting the output from the lead microresonator into the next microresonator’s input. We also identify the optimal parameters for this synchronization. Remarkably, even partial injection from the leader is sufficient for synchronization, paving the way for versatile future system configurations. Such systems could simultaneously utilize distinct spectral components for synchronization and transmission. This work advances our understanding of chaotic microresonator combs, showing them to be pivotal elements in next-generation optical communication systems.

Optical nonlinear processes are indispensable in a wide range of applications, including ultrafast lasers, microscopy, and quantum information technologies. Among the diverse nonlinear processes, second-order effects usually overwhelm the higher-order ones, except in centrosymmetric systems, where the second-order susceptibility vanishes to allow the use of the third-order nonlinearity. Here we demonstrate a hybrid photonic platform whereby the balance between second- and third-order susceptibilities can be tuned flexibly. By decorating ultra-high-Q silica microcavities with atomically thin tungsten diselenide, we observe cavity-enhanced second-harmonic generation and sum-frequency generation with continuous-wave excitation at a power level of only a few hundred microwatts. We show that the coexistence of second- and third-order nonlinearities in a single device can be achieved by carefully choosing the size and location of the two-dimensional material. Our approach can be generalized to other types of cavities, unlocking the potential of hybrid systems with controlled nonlinear susceptibilities for novel applications.

We report on an Er-doped fiber (EDF)-laser-based dual-comb system that allows us to perform triggerless asynchronous optical sampling pump-probe measurements of ultrafast demagnetization and spin precession in magnetic materials. Because the oscillation frequencies of the two frequency-comb light sources are highly stabilized, the pulse-to-pulse timing jitter is sufficiently suppressed, and data accumulation without any trigger signals is possible. To effectively induce spin precession in ferromagnetic thin films, the spectral bandwidth of the output of one of the EDF frequency comb sources is broadened by a highly nonlinear fiber and then amplified at a wavelength of about 1030 nm by a Yb-doped fiber amplifier. The output of the other frequency comb source is converted to about 775 nm by second harmonic generation. We used this system to observe ultrafast demagnetization and spin precession dynamics on the picosecond and nanosecond time scales in a permalloy thin film. This time-domain spectroscopy system is promising for the rapid characterization of spin-wave generation and propagation dynamics in magnetic materials.

Fabrication of silicon nitride (SiN) based high-Q microring resonators prepared by the hot-wire chemical vapor deposition (HWCVD) method is presented. By the virtue of low-stress HWCVD films, no special precautions against crack propagation were required for high confinement waveguide device fabrication. By using an additional annealing process, the intrinsic Q factor in excess of 5 × 105 was obtained in the telecommunication C band, and which allowed us to observe frequency comb generation. We also investigated into the anneal temperature dependence of the residual hydrogen concentration in the film as well as the optical properties of the microring resonators.

The development of ultrahigh-quality-factor (Q) microresonators has been driving such technologies as cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), high-precision sensing, optomechanics, and optical frequency comb generation. Here we report ultrahigh Q crystalline microresonator fabrication with a Q exceeding 108, for the first time to our knowledge, achieved solely by computer-controlled ultraprecision machining. Our machining fabrication method readily achieves the dispersion engineering and size control of manufactured devices via programmed machine motion, both of which were not possible with the conventional manual polishing method. We can achieve an ultrahigh Q without the need for subsequent careful polishing that is generally required to ensure that surface integrity is maintained. We carefully addressed the cutting condition and crystal anisotropy to overcome the large surface roughness that has thus far been the primary cause of the low Q in the machining process. Our result paves the way for a reliable fabrication with a view to various photonic applications utilizing ultrahigh-Q crystalline microresonators.

We demonstrate the efficient coupling (99.5%) of a silica whispering gallery mode microresonator directly with a silicon chip by using a silicon photonic crystal waveguide as a coupler. The efficient coupling is attributed to the small effective refractive index difference between the two devices. The large group index of the photonic crystal waveguide mode also contributes to the efficient coupling. A coupling Q of 2.68 × 106 is obtained, which allows us to achieve the critical coupling of a silica whispering gallery mode with an intrinsic Q of close to 107 with a Si chip.

Designing and engineering microresonator dispersion are essential for generating microresonator frequency comb. Microresonator frequency combs (microcombs, Kerr frequency combs) offer the potential for various attractive applications as a new type of coherent light source that is power efficient and compact and has a high repetition rate and a broad bandwidth. They are easily driven with a continuous-wave pump laser with adequate frequency tuning; however, the resonators must have a high quality (Q) factor and suitable dispersion. The emergence of cavity enhanced four-wave mixing, which is based on third-order susceptibility in the host material, results in the generation of broadband and coherent optical frequency combs in the frequency domain equivalent to an optical pulse in the time domain. The platforms on which Kerr frequency combs can be observed have been developed, thanks to intensive efforts by many researchers over a few decades. Ultrahigh-Q whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators are one of the major platforms since they can be made of a wide range of material including silica glass, fluoride crystals and semiconductors. In this review, we focus on the dispersion engineering of WGM microresonators by designing the geometry of the resonators based on numerical simulation. In addition, we discuss experimental methods for measuring resonator dispersion. Finally, we describe experimental results for Kerr frequency combs where second- and higher-order dispersions influence their optical spectra.

We show theoretically and numerically that mode-locking is feasible with a coupled-cavity system with gain and loss, notably, without any natural saturable absorber. We highlight that in the vicinity of the exceptional point, system Q exhibits substantial modulation even with minor refractive index changes and a minimal Kerr effect contribution. Leveraging this unique behavior, we propose an unprecedented approach wherein the lossy auxiliary cavity functions as an efficient artificial saturable absorber, thus facilitating mode-locking. This approach is not only novel, but also presents considerable advantages over conventional systems where both gain and saturable absorption are contained within a single microcavity. These benefits include reduced operational power and ease of post-adjustment, achievable through the manipulation of the coupling strength between the two microcavities.

To make dual-comb interferometry usable in a wide range of applications, it is important to achieve reproducible measurement results even in non-ideal environments that affect the repetition-rate stability. Here, we consider dual-comb interferometry based on a pair of fully referenced optical frequency combs (OFCs) and investigate the impact of fluctuations in the OFC repetition frequencies on the peak position of the center burst in the interferogram. We identify a phase-locking scheme that minimizes the impact of these fluctuations through choosing a special combination of phase-locked frequencies, and the resulting type of operating condition is termed integer-locking condition. Under the integer-locking condition, the number of sampling points in each interferogram remains constant regardless of repetition-rate variations, and this enables more stable phase-resolved measurements in non-ideal environments. We demonstrate the application of this approach using absolute path-length measurements and discuss the accuracy limit imposed by the integer-locking condition. Our findings offer a strategy for robust dual-comb interferometry outside metrology laboratories.

We investigate the intrinsic microscopic mechanism of photon upconversion in air-suspended single-walled carbon nanotubes through photoluminescence and upconversion photoluminescence spectroscopy. Nearly linear excitation power dependence of upconversion photoluminescence intensity is observed, indicating a one-photon process as the underlying mechanism. In addition, we find a strongly anisotropic response to the excitation polarization, which reflects the intrinsic nature of the upconversion process. In upconversion photoluminescence excitation spectra, three peaks are observed, which are similar to photoluminescence sidebands of the K-momentum dark singlet exciton. The features in the upconversion photoluminescence excitation spectra are well reproduced by our second-order exciton-phonon interaction model, enabling the determination of phonon energies and relative amplitudes. The analysis reveals that the upconversion photoluminescence can be described as a reverse process of the sideband emission linked to the K-momentum phonon modes. The validity of our model is further reinforced by temperature-dependent upconversion photoluminescence excitation measurements reflecting variations in the phonon population. Our findings underscore the pivotal role of the resonant exciton-phonon coupling in pristine carbon nanotubes and present potential for advanced optothermal technologies by engineering the excitation pathways.

Mode-locked ultrashort pulse sources with a repetition rate of up to several tens of gigahertz greatly facilitate versatile photonic applications such as frequency synthesis, metrology, radar, and optical communications. Dissipative Kerr soliton microcombs provide an attractive solution as a broadband, high-repetition-rate compact laser system in this context. However, its operation usually requires sophisticated pump laser control to initiate and stabilize the soliton microcombs, particularly in millimeter-sized ultrahigh-Q whispering-gallery resonators. Here, a mechanically actuated soliton microcomb oscillator is realized with a microwave repetition rate of 15 GHz. This enables direct initiation, subsequent long-term stabilization, and fine tuning of soliton combs without pump laser tunability that is generally required for soliton microcomb operation. The prospects for using this method with a wide range of applications are revealed that will benefit from mechanical soliton actuation such as optical clocks, spectral extension, and dual-comb spectroscopy.
