A ceremony to confer an honorary doctorate on Dr. Seoung Hwan Suh, president of Yonsei University, was held from 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13 at the Mita Public Speaking Hall (Mita Enzetsu-kan.)
Dr. Suh has made immense contributions to developments in urban economics and to the field of government administration, as well as rendered distinguished service in the areas of education and international exchange. Keio University decided to confer the degree of Doctor honoris causa upon him in recognition of these achievements.
At the conferral ceremony, the strains of the Wagner Society Women's Chorus' rendition of the Alma Mater "The Juku-ka" rang out as Dr. Suh made his entrance with Professor Mizuki Kawabata of the Faculty of Economics serving as the master of ceremonies and Professor Teruo Nakatsuma, dean of the Graduate School of Economics, reading the citation. President Kohei Itoh then conferred the honorary degree upon Dr. Suh. After that, Dr. Suh gave his speech, followed by President Itoh, who delivered a formal address.
Since signing an academic exchange agreement in 1970, Yonsei University and Keio University have continued various exchanges, and the four universities, including Waseda University and Korea University, have also deepened cooperation between their presidents, among other initiatives. In May this year, President Kohei Itoh received an honorary doctorate from Yonsei University. Keio University looks forward to further development and deeper exchanges between the two universities in the future.
