On December 4, Keio University hosted the prime minister of Sweden at Mita Campus where he delivered a lecture titled, "Sweden as a Global Actor in an Uncertain World: EU, NATO, Ukraine, Green Transition, Gender Equality, and Innovation." The event was attended by officials from the Swedish government, representatives from the Embassy of Sweden in Tokyo, and ambassadors and staff from various European embassies. Keio University was represented by President Kohei Itoh and Vice-President Motohiro Tsuchiya, while Professor Sayuri Shirai from the Faculty of Policy Management served as moderator for the event. Many Keio students, faculty members, and staff also participated, leading to an audience of approximately 150 people.
In his opening address, President Itoh welcomed Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to Keio University and touched on many of the shared values between Japan and Sweden, such as the commitment to building a sustainable and prosperous society. He also highlighted the longstanding friendship and academic exchanges between Keio and many Swedish partner universities.
Prime Minister Kristersson then gave his lecture, which focused on how Sweden approaches global challenges. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding democracy and preserving peace, eliminating the use of fossil fuels, and the need for further technological innovation and international cooperation.
Following the lecture, Professor Shirai from the Faculty of Policy Management served as moderator for a "fireside chat," during which the prime minister and participating students had a lively discussion on a wide range of topics, including geopolitical risks, environmental issues, and how to create an inclusive society.
