On September 1, 2023, Keio University held the Experience Japan Exhibition 2023 & Tokyo Symposium: Unleash your Potential in Japan at Mita Campus, Tokyo, as part of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's (MEXT) Top Global University Project. This is the final year of the Top Global University Project, which began in 2014. This symposium reviewed the initiatives of the project with a focus on accepting more international students to Japan and sharing about challenges and future prospects.
The symposium began with a keynote speech titled "Studying in Japan and the Future of Japan" by Professor Emeritus Shinichi Kitaoka of the University of Tokyo. This was followed by a Q&A session moderated by Keio University Vice-President Motohiro Tsuchiya.
After the keynote speech, Professor Norihisa Miki from the Faculty of Science and Technology at Keio University led a session in which two former international students who are now building careers in Japan in business and academia, shared their real-life experiences on the merits of studying in Japan, the challenges they have faced, and their career trajectories.
Finally, Professor Mayumi Ishikawa from the Center for Global Initiatives at Osaka University, Professor Takeshi Hirose from the Top Global University (SHARE) Office at Kyushu University, and Professor Hisayo Ogushi, dean of the International Center at Keio University, all of whom are from universities selected by the Top Global University Project, held a panel discussion on the future prospects for the globalization of higher education, based on the achievements and challenges of each university.
