On Thursday, September 22, 2022, an official welcome reception was held for the four Ukrainian international students who have been accepted into Keio through the "Academic Support Program for Displaced Ukrainian Students." For this program, Keio University has partnered with Pathways Japan (PJ) and the Japan ICU Foundation (JICUF) to provide a place to learn for displaced Ukrainian students who have been deprived of their rights to an education by recent events.
The reception was held in the Old Library Memorial Room on Mita Campus. Both Vice-President Motohiro Tsuchiya, the moderator for the gathering, and President Kohei Itoh welcomed the students, promising that Keio University, a school whose motto is, "the pen is mightier than the sword," will support them in every way possible as they continue their studies. These opening remarks were followed by comments from the deans of the graduate schools that will be hosting the incoming students: Dean Toshiharu Saiki of the Graduate School of Science and Technology, Dean Fumitoshi Kato of the Graduate School of Media and Governance, and Dean Hidekazu Nishimura of the Graduate School of System Design and Management. The international students, in response, incorporated their Japanese language skills into brief statements about their appreciation for the opportunity to study in these graduate programs and excitement for their upcoming research endeavors. The event then shifted into friendly conversations and open discussions, followed by a commemorative photo, and closing remarks from Vice-President Akiyo Okuda.
The four students will initially be studying at Keio university as "visiting international students" before taking the official entrance examinations and enrolling in their respective master's programs as full-time degree students. Their tuition, room, and board will be provided throughout their time at Keio University.
Keio University will continue to engage in various activities, such as raising public awareness and financial support, to assist displaced students in response to developments in Ukraine.
