On May 20, Keio University President Kohei Itoh signed the "Leiden Principles" on behalf of RU 11 Japan with its global network partners at the 20th anniversary conference of LERU, the League of European Research Universities held in Leiden, the Netherlands.
The Leiden Principles consist of five principles of trust, diversity, openness, stewardship, and freedom that reaffirm and ensure the values of research-intensive universities around the globe. The signees are committed to providing independent and rigorous new knowledge to individuals and communities, and government, business, policy, and decision-makers. The universities will continue contributing to global society through nurturing talented graduates in order to solve unprecedented ongoing political, economic, and societal challenges during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
RU 11 Japan, represented by President Kohei Itoh, signed the Leiden Principles along with its counterparts the AAU (U.S.), Go8 (Australia), U15 Canada, U15 Germany, the Russell Group (U.K.), and LERU. Collectively, this encompasses 161 of the world's leading universities.
