As part of the Keio University Ishii-Ishibashi Fund for Education and Research Development, Keio University offers the Keio University Global Fellowship (Study Abroad Grant for Privately Financed Students). This is a scheme whereby the university provides aid to students who completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at Keio University in order to allow them to study and obtain a degree at an overseas graduate school.
The selection criteria for the fellowship include reasons for going overseas, study and/or research plan, and academic records. Students selected as Keio University Global Fellows receive up to 5,000,000 yen in financial aid for the costs incurred from studying abroad including tuition and living expenses. The purpose of this fellowship is to foster an even greater number of individuals who play an active role in the global arena with a focus on Keio's transdisciplinary initiatives (Longevity, Security, and Creativity), which are at the core of the Top Global University Project, by supporting accomplished students who are rising to the challenge of studying at an overseas graduate school.
Reports from the Keio University Global Fellows 2021 can be found below.
Kensuke Kawamoto
Graduate of the Faculty of Law (March 2020)
Studies at: Columbia University (United States)
I am currently pursuing my master's degree in East Asian Studies at Columbia University. I am particularly interested in Japanese art history, and my research focuses on the development of the American interest in Japanese ceramics since the 1980s. Last year, as part of my art history class, I had some opportunities to visit art galleries and museum archives in New York City to view fabulous East Asian artworks. Since Columbia has a long history of commitment to Japanese art studies and offers rich resources, it is the perfect place to do my research. I feel deeply blessed to have an enjoyable and fulfilling graduate school life surrounded by wonderful faculty and my inspiring cohort.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to the Keio University Global Fellowship that has enabled me to concentrate on my studies without any financial worries.
Yuya Shimizu
3rd-year doctoral student, Graduate School of Economics
Studies at: University of Wisconsin-Madison (United States)
I am majoring in econometrics, which is the study of quantitative methods for economic problems. The University of Wisconsin-Madison has traditionally been a leading university in this field, and I am thrilled to study here.
The first-year in Econ Ph.D. focuses on core courses, so while at the moment I can devote only a limited amount of time to my research, between classes I am able to attend seminars and read papers. There will be a preliminary exam at the end of the first year, and my immediate goal is to develop research ideas while ensuring that I am prepared to pass the exam.
I greatly appreciate the support of this grant which has enabled me to concentrate on my academic work, especially during the pandemic
Yushi Abe
3rd-year doctoral student, Graduate School of Medicine
Studies at: University of Oxford (UK)
I am working with Professor Manu Vatish in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Oxford, UK, on the analysis of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in human amniotic fluid stem cells. EVs contain microRNAs and proteins, which mediate cell-to-cell communication and are thought to be involved in a variety of biological processes. I am studying the effect of EVs secreted from human amniotic fluid stem cells on macrophages.
Despite the various restrictions imposed by the new coronavirus pandemic, I have been able to concentrate on my research with the support of many people in Japan and the UK. Thanks to this scholarship, I can devote myself fully to my research without any financial concerns.
