Keio University has until now continued to implement various initiatives aimed at realizing a campus where everyone can learn, teach, and work comfortably and without anxiety. Additionally, with the recent enactment of the Charter for the Promotion of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, the university is further strengthening its activities.
This has made the recent spate of incidents violating human dignity and impinging on human rights, including acts of criminal behavior, all the more deplorable.
For Keio University, which calls on its members to serve as "sources of honorable character" and "paragons of intellect and morality" within society, these are especially shameful acts that cannot be tolerated.
Although the persons involved in each incident have already been strictly disciplined, as president, I deeply regret the fact that such incidents have continued unabated and I take this matter extremely seriously.
At universities, no act violating human dignity or impinging on human rights, whatever its form, must be condoned, including of course, criminal behavior. All measures necessary to ensure that such incidents never reoccur will be taken, and we will once more make every effort to realize the spirit proclaimed in our Charter for the Promotion of Equity, Dignity, and Inclusion.
