On Saturday, June 8, the Keio University Faculty of Science and Technology held the 80th Anniversary Event "Medicine-engineering Tie-up Symposium" at the 2nd floor basement Multimedia Room in the Sosokan, Yagami Campus.
The symposium was held as part of the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the Faculty of Science and Technology, and among the research collaborations with medical and pharmaceutical researchers promoted by the Faculty of Science and Technology, outcomes of representative medicine-engineering tie-up projects were presented through lectures not only by Faculty of Science and Technology researchers but also by related researchers in medicine and pharmaceutical science. On the day, more than 130 persons took part, comprising Keio students and faculty and staff members currently affiliated to the Faculty of Science and Technology, School of Medicine, and Faculty of Pharmacy, joined by industry delegates and persons from other universities.
The symposium was divided into morning and afternoon sessions, with special lectures by medical researchers and lectures on outcomes of joint research by researchers in the Faculty of Science and Technology and those in medical and pharmaceutical fields.
At the special lectures, Professor Hideyuki Okano from the Department of Physiology at the School of Medicine took the stage in the morning session to talk about regenerative medicine and drug design research for neurological disorders using iPS cell technologies as well as the use of primates in revolutionary neuroscience research. Professor Okano said that the measurement technologies and informatics used in the research exemplified the outcomes of medicine-engineering tie-ups.
In the afternoon session, Professor Masato Yasui of the Department of Pharmacology at the School of Medicine gave an overview of "Water Biology," a new concept of which he is an advocate, touching on its potential to pursue the essence of life by deepening our understanding of water through medicine-engineering tie-ups.
