The Tsunashima Sustainable Smart Town (SST), a town development project in which Keio University has actively been engaged, has been completed. Tsunashima SST is located in Tsunashima-Higashi, Kohoku-ku, Yokohama City. A ceremony to mark its grand opening and a presentation session were held on March 26, with Keio Vice President Naoki Watanabe participating in these events.
Tsunashima SST, built on the former factory site of electronics manufacturer Panasonic, is a next-generation urban smart town. It is comprised of various facilities which include those for research and development, commercial and residential buildings, and a hydrogen refueling station. The Keio University Tsunashima SST International Dormitory, which opened this March, is one of the residential facilities at Tsunashima SST. It is expected that the town will be a center for global, regional, and intellectual exchange, with international and Japanese students at its heart.
Furthermore, it is planned to use the town’s location, a mere 15-minute walk from Hiyoshi Campus, to develop joint industry-academia research and to carry out demonstration experiments with the town through the Tsunashima SST Lab, a research base in the town headed by Panasonic and Keio University, with an emphasis on Keio seminars and laboratories.
