On Monday, February 27, a public hearing on policy recommendations for Keio University’s Program for Leading Graduate Schools—Science for Development of Super Mature Society—was held by the first graduating class of the program and others at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s (MEXT) Joho Hiroba.
The public hearing on policy recommendations is one of the final tasks for students to complete the five-year combined master’s and doctoral degree program. It is also an opportunity for each student, from their respective positions, to have their training judged by society. Until this point, the students studied for two master’s degrees, which extends over the sciences and the humanities, and then for their doctoral degree with support from MEXT. At the same time, under mentors working for leading Japanese companies, etc., they learned how to identify problems from the point of view of society and industry, and improved their abilities to plan how to actually solve these problems. Through their policy recommendations, the public hearing was a good opportunity to see what the students had achieved in the program.
After a speech from the representative of MEXT’s University Promotion Division, Higher Education Bureau, 10 students from the first graduating class of the program, as well as others, presented their policy recommendations to the ministries and government agencies concerned, and there were active discussions with the audience members. Furthermore, at the beginning and during the break, 10 students made poster presentations. At the end of the meeting, Professor Hiroshi Nagano, a visiting professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology who is also in charge of supervising policy recommendations for this program, gave a general discussion and review, and the audience members also shared their valuable opinions.
