The Internet is composed by many routers. On the other hand, energy consumption of all routers in the Internet is an important problem. Because of increasing the transmitting speed, it reached 7.3TW/h in 2008, and now, it reaches 13TW/h in 2010. Thus, we have proposed the Optical Aggregation Network which aggregates many routers into one cloud router and creates a simple tree-based network for reducing the energy consumption of all routers intensively for saving earth. In this presentation, we propose ecological scalable WDM Network by using PLZT optical WSS (Wavelength Selective Switch) for implementing the Optical Aggregation Network. This PLZT WSS has slot switching function. Therefore, it could extend the distance of network and could add more subscribers to implement ecological scalable network.

In the ubiquitous society that obtains a huge address space by making to IPv6, it is assumed that all devices are connected to the network. We propose that the devices connected to the network are defined as “Service-Part” in Ubiquitous Grid Network Environment (uGrid), and the users can provide new services by selecting desired Service-Parts and combining. However, a number of users’ accessing popular Service-Parts can occur load concentration. And so, load distribution of Service-Parts become possible by advertising the user who connect to the Service-Parts as new Service-Parts, and connecting between users. However, the services of the users who connect with the relay users are interrupted if the relay users secede suddenly. Especially, the video delivery system becomes a major issue especially. In the present study, it proposes the video delivery system to consider connection stability.

Recent years, the power supply becomes a problem because the number of users of the data center increase rapidly as cloud computing develops. In the world wide trend getting rid of fossil fuel and nuclear energy, it is hoped to use the photovoltaic power generation which is natural energy effectively. But, it is impossible to provide services at nighttime. By moving virtual machines according to the motion of the sun, the photovoltaic natural energy can be used effectively. Then, we aim at the realization of Follow the SUN Data Center which sends and receives virtual machines between geographically away data centers. In this paper, we consider the virtual machine migration scheme using existing techniques which solve the communication continuity problem between user and virtual machine. Also, we compare existing techniques, and we consider the possibility of realizing Follow the SUN Data Center.

This presentation describes newly developed GMPLS extensions for realizing energy optimal traffic engineering technologies. We are developing “MiDORi (Multi- (layer, path, and resources) Dynamically Optimized Routing) Network Technologies” that is composed of a low energy consumption network design tool (MiDORi PCE), GMPLS extensions (MiDORi GMPLS) for controlling network equipment and a MiDORi router/switch controlled by MiDORi GMPLS. “midori” is a Japanese word which means “green” in English. In the presentation, the detail GMPLS extensions (OSPF extension, RSVP extension, and LMP extension) and experimental results of MiDORi Network Technologies will be presented.

To construct energy optimal Internet, a new traffic engineering concept aggregating traffic into specific links and dynamically powering off interfaces of routers/switches should be introduced. This paper proposes a network topology design algorithm and examines link power management.

As increasing Ethernet service users and enhancing service functions, a new generation wide-area layer-2 network (NGL2) beyond the state-of-the-art carrier grade Ethernet is expected. For realizing the next generation layer-2 network, we have proposed new layer2 protocol technologies based on Ethernet technologies and have developed prototype systems. In this article, a newly developed layer-2 address (MAC address) assignment policy will be described. And, user side cross-connection setting scheme for setting up end-to-end layer-2 path will be proposed.

With the advance of ubiquitous society, it is expected that everything will be allocated IP address and connected to the network. In a ubiquitous grid networking environment(uGrid) we have proposed, we define not only devices but also program functions and contents as “Service-Part” by allocating IP address. uGrid provides mush-up desired service for users along the flow of service by interconnecting various Service-Parts. Because we allocate IP address to Service-Parts we can manage Service-Parts within Network layer. Then, we propose a new system “Service-Routing” by which service provision in uGrid scales all over the world. In proposal, we propose the Network System where Service-Parts advertise the Service Cost in the same way routers advertise the link cost, which is feasible by extending OSPF. By calculating the route of the flow of service in this system, appropriate service provision that is not achievable with application layer can be realized. Thus, additionally, we propose routing scheme of flow of service by ILP(integer linear programming) and extending Dijkstra method. We evaluated the effectiveness of proposal by computer simulation.

Recently cloud service and M2M or IoT service will become popular for different applications. So two different optical network architectures are proposed for creating future energy efficient network services. The first architecture is a centralized approach for higher energy efficiency; it uses a data center-centric optical aggregation network based on wavelength / time-slot multiplexing. All layer-3 or upper traffic are transferred through the simple metro / access optical aggregation network and switched in centralized scalable giant router at the data center. Total power consumption of the network can be reduced hundred fold compared to the existing Internet. The second is service mash-up by linked data through a network that uses broadband optical wire for the IoT era. All service contents, hardware, and also software programs are defined as service parts. Huge bandwidth optical wire interconnects some service parts and creates new mash-up services in the network. That creates deep network functionality in combination with network and processing functions. Network services are always moving like pendulum, so both two technologies can be applied future network service.

The Elastic Lambda Aggregation Network (EλAN) which aims to integrate several individual service access networks and metro networks into one optical switching network has been proposed [1]. EλAN consists of programmable OLTs (P-OLTs) and ONUs (P-ONUs), Optical Distribution Network (ODN), and a wide area virtual layer-2 Switch (VL2SW). Many logical OLTs (L-OLTs) can be worked in one P-OLT box and a few number of logical ONUs (L-ONUs) can be worked in one P-ONU box. One L-OLT will accommodate maximum 256 L-ONUs. ODN supplies flexible optical paths among L-OLTs and L-ONUs. VL2SW supplies flexible Layer-2 paths among L-OLTs and a core network. Therefore, a network operator can select flexible combination of L-OLT and L-ONUs.
