The conventional telephony networking was used mainly for communication between two terminals. However, recent network such as the Internet is mainly used for data distribution and access via the network. Recent research efforts are conducted to realize new network architecture that is optimized for this kind of communication, but it lacked in scalability when the data is added, moved, or updated. In this paper, we propose a new architecture call Data-centric Network (DCN) that allows scalable access to dynamic data in a widely distributed environment.

In order to reduce the energy consumption of transport/data center networks, MiDORi network technology is introduced. This network is based on a concept of aggregating traffic into specific links, and powering off interfaces of routers/switches that do not convey traffic. In this paper, we focus on an energy-optimal topology calculation method that can adjust the link reduction rate and the calculation time by setting different depth. However, there is no consideration of reliability which is a fatal issue for energy efficient networks that consist of minimal links. Therefore, two failure management methods are proposed. By computer simulation, we compared the two proposed methods from the perspective of energy efficiency and calculation time.

Energy serving is the one of the important issue for future network. “Green by ICT” and “Green of ICT” are two approaches for this problem. This paper shows that photonic network technology is the key technology for future green network. In addition, new Cloud type layer-3 network architecture is proposed to reduce network power. Next, EVNO, Energy Virtual Network Operator, is new concept for smart network. This paper also describes this architecture and approach of this network.

This paper proposes an energy efficient multi-layer network using extended GMPLS with link power control. The experimental result shows that dynamic energy saving according to traffic volume is realized by layer-1 and layer-2 unified control.

To improve disaster tolerance in optical access and aggregation network, Elastic Lambda Aggregation Network (EAN) has been proposed. This paper proposes a novel TDMA based OLT sharing method among ONU groups in EAN.

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) employs communication based on location independent data identifiers (IDs) that enables efficient data dissemination. However, some important challenges still remains in the conventional ICN schemes when they are applied to a highly mobile and distributed environment, such as growth in amount of route information or increased transaction load of name resolution services. To accommodate this, we propose a new ICN scheme where routes are aggregated at aggregation nodes and optimized routes are established during data registration transactions to mitigate the amount of route information, delay, and transaction load. We evaluate the proposed scheme using a nation-wide test bed of 37 intermediate nodes and 336 mobile terminals. We show that the proposed scheme enables efficient data dissemination where the mobile terminals register and retrieve data in widely distributed manner.

To improve disaster tolerance in optical access and aggregation network, the Elastic Lambda Aggregation Network (EλAN) has been proposed. In the EλAN, an active optical distribution network (ODN) will provide restoration capability among an optical line terminal (OLT) and optical network units (ONUs). However, when many central offices (COs) will be collapsed and ODN well be able to provides fiber routes from ONUs to COs, few OLTs should support enormous numbers of ONUs. If the number of ONUs is over the accommodation number of the OLT, many ONUs are not able to recover from the disaster. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a time division multiple access (TDMA) based logical OLT sharing method among ONU groups. The proposed method provides exceeding the ONU accommodation limit number of single OLT. The prototype implementation and performance evaluation results are present.

The network architecture called Energy Efficient and Enhanced-type Data-centric Network (E3-DCN) is proposed for a new information centric network (ICN). E3-DCN not only realizes ICN but also has the ability of data generation by organizing and combining relevant resource such as original data and kinds of processing services. In addition, in order to improve energy efficiency of data transmission, E3-DCN chooses optimal transmission path to transmit data based on electrical packet switching and optical path switching. E3-DCN achieves an energy efficient network and is designed to fit with the network virtualization platform in JGN-X.

The Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of Internet traffic volume lies in the 30-70% [1] range. For several good reasons (to handle unexpected traffic spurts, link failures and traffic growth), network resources are significantly over-provisioned in today’s networks, and it is quite common to see link utilization in the 30%-40% range [2]. While new optical fibers can be laid, the costs of such deployment should be weighed against the costs of solutions that enable network operation at higher utilization levels. For example, new developments in optical technologies, such as flexible elastic optical networks, enable the provisioning of variable-bandwidth, variable-QoS (Quality of service) transmission pipes. In addition, current and future multi-media services have widely divergent bandwidth and QoE (Quality of Experience) requirements. ACTION (Applications Coordinated with Transport, IP and Optical Networks) is a multi-QoE, application-centric, highly energy-efficient network architecture that leverages flexible elastic optical network technologies. This project is supported by both the NSF, USA, and NICT, Japan, under the JUNO (joint collaboration between Japan and US) program.

The unified control of core / metro / access networks using Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is effective for providing services flexibly. In this paper, experimental results of the unified control by hierarchized Controller utilizing OpenFlow protocol and abstracted network are presented.

Against the problem that contents request occupies the majority of today's Internet traffic, content centric network(CCN) is proposed. In CCN, user request contents by content's name and relay node cache contents. Because of it's characteristic, content search time uctuates greatly on whether the user's request content are cached at the relay node as soon as possible. So, cache methods that search the content as soon as possible is needed. In this paper, we introduced some cache methods and revealed its advantages and problems. Then, we proposed cache method that reflect the user location into survival time in order to solve the problems of the conventional method. Compared to the conventional method , simulation shows the proposed method improved cache hit ratio and the number of hops the content can be acquired.
