The 2023 Keio SDGs Student Conference has commenced. This marks the second year the conference is being held since it was first initiated in the 2022 academic year. The Student Conference will involve students chosen through open recruitment as well as random selection from across all of Keio's undergraduate faculties. During the sessions, student members engage in discussions with each other while consulting with experts to propose an overall vision, specific goals, and obtainable targets for Keio University to make progress towards its SDGs.
In the Spring Semester, students will learn about the current situation surrounding the SDGs through lectures and discussions, and in the Fall Semester, students shall discuss the themes of "environment," "society," "economy," and "overall approach" in sub-working groups and compile a list of recommendations addressed to the president of Keio University.
The second session, an introductory one, was held on Wednesday, May 24, and was attended by about 80 participants. The session began with advice from the four leaders of the previous year's sub-working groups on the preparation of the recommendations, followed by a lecture by Professor Norichika Kanie of the Graduate School of Media and Governance, and a dialogue with Professor Kanie and Guest Professor Hiroko Kuniya of the Graduate School of Media and Governance. In the dialogue, each of them talked about the significance of the SDGs, and expressed their wish for the students to "take bold action and make bold mistakes" and "lead the world with innovative ideas."
Group discussions and presentations were held at the end of the session. Based on the theme of "What is the significance of having a common goal for the whole world?", participants across different faculties and student years came together to exchange various opinions.
