Structuring Your Learning According to Your Interests and Goals
3rd Year, Department of Political Science (as of FY2025)
Studying bookkeeping in my third year of high school sparked my interest in the fascination of analyzing companies through numbers, and I set a goal to become a certified public accountant. At the same time, I began to wonder if there were systems and social structures behind those numbers.
When applying to university, I chose the Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Law because I wanted to build a foundation in social systems and ways of thinking before learning specialized accounting knowledge. I felt it was meaningful to study the underlying ideologies and views of society rather than just accounting as a technique. Another reason I applied to Keio University was learning that Yukichi Fukuzawa was the person who first introduced double-entry bookkeeping to Japan. Currently, I am researching Yukichi Fukuzawa in the Ogawara Seminar, with a focus on the background of his efforts to introduce Western double-entry bookkeeping into Japanese society.
In the Department of Political Science, there are many opportunities to think about society and systems from the perspective of "why they are the way they are." Through my studies, I have developed my own criteria for judgment and an attitude of looking at things from multiple perspectives. I feel the appeal of the Department of Political Science lies in the fact that you can study while keeping a wide range of options open, without limiting your career path to a single one at an early stage. While studying political science, I challenged myself with the certified public accountant examination and was able to pass it while still enrolled.
After graduation, I have a job lined up at an audit firm. I feel that the thinking skills and ways of perceiving values I cultivated in the Department of Political Science will be a great support when collaborating with people from different positions and backgrounds. My studies in the Department of Political Science have become the foundation for shaping my career path while expanding my potential.
