Continuing to Confront Questions with No Single Answer
4th Year, Department of Law (as of the 2025 academic year)
I first became interested in law when I was a junior high school student. In a social studies class, I learned about the first case in Japan where a ruling of unconstitutionality was issued, and I was strongly drawn to the attitude of judges who re-examine justice within the existing order.
Since entering university, Professor Oya's Legal Philosophy class in the field of basic legal studies has left a particularly strong impression on me. By learning about the accumulation of history and thought upon which laws are built, I realized the fascination of considering the values and social backgrounds behind legal provisions. In my third year, I joined Professor Oya's seminar to further deepen my study of legal philosophy. I feel that through legal philosophy, I have developed the thinking skills to make judgments while comparing multiple values and perspectives.
In the future, I want to become someone capable of conducting research and policy planning related to criminal policy and criminology. What form should legal and judicial systems take to prevent crime, and how should we respond when it occurs? To confront these questions that have no single answer, I plan to go to law school after graduating from the undergraduate program and learn on the ground while working in practice as a prosecutor.
I am from Fukushima Prefecture and entered Keio University through the general entrance examination. A university in the heart of the city offers encounters with diverse people, which is very stimulating. Furthermore, support systems such as scholarships are well-established. Therefore, I hope that students from regional areas will not be afraid and will take on the challenge. Studying in the Department of Law not only provides knowledge but also fosters the ability to keep thinking about "how to make society better." I believe the greatest appeal of the Department of Law is the process of continuing to confront questions that have no single answer.
