Keio Yokohama Elementary School: Insect Specimens and Field Guides
The library at Keio Yokohama Elementary School, the "Chiyu no Hiroba" (Plaza of Wisdom and Courage), displays a large number of insect specimens. These include rare insects from all over the world, capturing the interest of the elementary school students.
Many of the specimens are placed near the shelves for natural sciences (classification 4), allowing students to see the real thing at any time. In addition, related insect books are displayed alongside the specimens. This is done to meet the students' desire to learn more about a particular insect. The name, classification, and other details are also noted on the specimens so that students can quickly find information about them.
In this way, the elementary school library is designed to enhance students' intellectual curiosity by allowing them to move back and forth between real-life materials and books.
