Congratulations to graduate student Natsuki Tsunoda in Prof. Fujii Lab for receiving the gold prize in
the 64th Fujifilm Photo Contest’s Student Category!
The Fujifilm Photo Contest is one of Japan’s leading photography competitions, boasting a history of
more than 50 years. Every year, the contest attracts a wide range of entries, from experienced
photography enthusiasts to young photographers with unique perspectives and creative vision.
Ms. Tsunoda’s work was highly acclaimed for its depiction of a dancer in motion, striking composition,
and the aesthetic qualities created by film grain and subtle hues—hallmarks of film photography.
In this work, she explained, she deliberately incorporated the “ghosting” effect found in photos
before the gelatin silver process was introduced in 1880, without any post-processing, to fully utilize
the characteristics of film photography. She sought to preserve the beautiful yet fleeting moments of
the dancer and the flower, as well as the swift movement of the ballet costume, in a still image.
