Camp for Designing the Future 2023

This year's Camp for Designing the Future has concluded.

Camp for Designing the Future 2023 (Event Report)

What is the SFC Camp for Designing the Future?

SFC will be holding the "Camp for Designing the Future" again this year. The "camp" is not a "camping trip" in the usual sense, but an environment where you can learn the importance of utilizing your abilities and experiences on-site and translating your creativity and ingenuity into action. The approaches to various problems that SFC advocates for require "the ability to execute." While the "camp" is prepared in advance, the specific activities are designed improvisationally according to the situation on the ground. We know from experience that flexible ideas and flashes of insight are born in unexpected ways and often in informal settings. In that sense, the "camp" is also likely to provide many hints for understanding communication between people. In the first place, both "campus" and "camp" are derived from the Latin word "campus," which means "a flat place or open field." The essence of intellectual activity at a university is to share a special time through free and open discussion. The "Camp for Designing the Future" is a place where diverse knowledge and wisdom collide, allowing participants to experientially consider the "ability to execute" that will lead to the future. Let's engage our minds and bodies with the peers gathered at the "camp" and take another step toward the future.

Workshops

【SFC・Overnight・Aug 2-3】WS01: Craft Workshop ~ Find, Imagine, Create, and Make a Scene ~

Our surroundings are filled with various things that have yet-to-be-discovered potential. From tree branches fallen in the woods to discarded bulky waste, if we take a closer look, wash them, or assemble them, we might find things that could become tools or furniture. This undiscovered potential can be found not only in objects but also in spaces. Just by placing a single chair in an empty lot or on a roadside, a space that was nothing can suddenly transform into a lively place where people can be. When we get used to a life of buying cheap and convenient ready-made products, we tend to forget the rich potential of objects and spaces. In this workshop, we will walk around the campus, collect various items, and use them to try making outdoor furniture such as chairs and tables. This is a two-day workshop with an overnight stay on campus. Let's walk around outside to discover, pick up and reinterpret things, move our hands and sweat as we work, and create a new scene at SFC by placing our finished works.

【SFC・Day Trip・Aug 3】WS02: Business Design Workshop (Food and Business) ~ Solving Global Issues Through the Food Business ~

When you hear the word "management," you might think of the management of for-profit companies. However, the principles of management can contribute to all kinds of human activities and society. From social reform and government reform to the management of non-profit organizations, wherever people act as an organized group, the knowledge of business administration is being utilized. SFC is an ideal campus for studying business administration. Social and business issues often involve conflicts of interest and dilemmas among various stakeholders, making them difficult to solve. To solve such problems, one must comprehensively utilize all kinds of knowledge, overcome dilemmas, and derive the most desirable solutions. Furthermore, important decisions regarding management are fundamentally made through discussions among multiple stakeholders. This is because difficult decisions require creative discussions to overcome various dilemmas. In this workshop, we want to take up global issues related to food, such as food loss, and consider problem-solving from a business perspective. Each participant will take on the perspective of a manager and, together with other participants, experience a simulated decision-making process to derive creative solutions, thereby deepening their understanding of the essence of management. We are looking for high school students who are interested in entrepreneurship, management, and leadership.

【SFC・Day Trip・Aug 3】WS03: "Sabori" (Playing Hooky) Workshop 3 ~ Designing the Future of "Saboru" (Playing Hooky) ~

Our daily lives are regulated by schedules and calendars. Commuting, classes, and club activities all had set times and places, which was the "norm." However, due to the impact of COVID-19, various activities went online, and our "norm" changed. At first, we may have been confused by this change, but gradually we got used to it, and some of us may have even found it comfortable. And now, we are transitioning to "Category 5."

When things are strictly decided, we feel a little rebellious. When many things are regulated, "saboru" (playing hooky) becomes a tempting and thrilling adventure. And by playing hooky, good things happen by chance, we meet someone, or we discover something. This is the third "Sabori" Workshop, but until now, they have all been held online. This year, it will finally be a real-life "sabori" experience. In this workshop, we will consider the meaning and value of "saboru" on the premise of daily life after the transition to "Category 5." How will we face the various activities that have gone online in recent years? How will we spend our time waiting, moving, and commuting? We want to create a place where we can freely talk about our relationships, such as communication and gatherings, triggered by "saboru."

【SFC・Day Trip・Aug 3】WS04: Health Science Workshop ~ Rethinking Diversity and Inclusion ~

At SFC, we transcend the boundaries of academic disciplines to understand human health and well-being and pursue an integrated science to create a "healthy society." A feature of our health science is that faculty members active at the forefront of various fields gather and emphasize three concepts: "physical health," "mental health," and "social health." We call the program where these can be learned in a balanced way the "Health Science Perspective" and have produced graduates who are developing unique social activities.

In the [Camp for Designing the Future 2023], we want to think deeply with everyone about the essence of "diversity" and "inclusion," which we have been hearing a lot about recently. How do we ourselves, and the communities and societies we live in, perceive the diversity of each individual? Can people create a society where those who are different from themselves can live easily? The starting point for thinking about these unanswerable questions may be "interest" and a "feeling heart."

On the day of the workshop, faculty and students deeply involved in this theme will also participate, and while interacting with each other, we want to make it an opportunity to rethink the "obvious" and grasp it from the fundamentals. We look forward to your participation.

【Nagasaki・2 days, 1 night・Aug 2-3】Nagasaki WS: Regional Problem-Solving Workshop in Nagasaki ~ How to Create an Effective Space ~

Nagasaki City is a leading tourist city full of attractions such as history, culture, and nature, and is also known nationwide as a city of slopes. Houses are densely built on hillsides, creating a unique landscape. However, in recent years, the number of vacant houses on these slopes has been increasing due to population outflow, and countermeasures are being considered.

On the other hand, in various places, various initiatives are being carried out, such as creating cafes and community gathering places by effectively utilizing vacant houses. From there, various activities that contribute to solving regional issues are also being born.

Therefore, in this workshop, we will visit places that utilize vacant houses on the slopes of Nagasaki and, through thorough discussion, challenge the creation of practical knowledge for solving regional issues that is feasible and utilizes the unique perspectives of high school students.

【Tottori・3 days, 2 nights・Aug 2-4】Camp for Designing the Future in Tottori (Nichinan Town): Augmented Town Workshop ~ Supporting People's Health with XR and Robotics ~ (Co-hosted by Tottori Prefecture, WebDINO Japan)

In the Augmented Town Workshop, we aim to build a new town platform that makes full use of the latest technologies such as XR and robotics, using a specific area within Tottori Prefecture as a model case. This year's theme is the creation of a regional healthcare service that emphasizes humanitude. Humanitude is a word meaning "human-ness," but in the context of healthcare, it refers to the idea of "valuing the relationship and bond between both the person being cared for and the person providing care, without distinguishing between them."

The key word for this workshop is "augmentation." We will research the problems faced by healthcare services in the target area, and while preserving the good old parts of the region, we will effectively introduce various technologies suitable for the "present," such as VR, AR, MR, robotics, high-precision sensing of environmental and human information, and furthermore, information sharing technologies on the Web, to prototype a mechanism that creates new value and a sense of presence for the region and the people living there. The augmentation of these values and sense of presence will weave new connections between people. It may sound paradoxical, but by introducing technology, it is possible to bring back "human-ness" to healthcare services where DX is advancing.

A town that can gently transform while preserving the old and augmenting the value and sense of presence of connections. Won't you join us in drawing the near future of such a town?
