Recent status of the polymer optical fiber (POF) for high speed data communication and telecommunication is reviewed. The GI POF was proposed for the first time at Keio University, and several methodologies to fabricate GI POF have been currently proposed. In this paper, we clarify the great advantage of perfluorinated (PF) polymer as the polymer matrix of low-loss and high bandwidth GI POF. It is generally known that the PF polymer can decrease the intrinsic absorption loss compared with PMMA, which is the conventional material of POF. Furthermore, it was found that low material dispersion of the PF polymer is another advantage to obtain the high bandwidth GI POF. It was clarified for the first time that the power distribution of modes formed by the mode dependence attenuation was the dominant factors of the higher bandwidth of the GI POF than theoretically predicted bandwidth, while the effect of the mode coupling was small.

We proposed highly scattering optical transmission (HSOT) polymers and applied it to a light pipe of a backlighting system for liquid crystal displays (LCDs). The HSOT polymer backlighting system having not only approximately twice the brightness but also twice the efficiency of the conventional one was realized based on analysis of multiple scattering in the HSOT polymers. The problem of color dispersion which had been believed to be the nature of scattering phenomenon was solved by optimizing the heterogeneous structures in the HSOT polymers. As a result, the HSOT polymer backlighting system with sufficient color uniformity was achieved. In addition, the HSOT polymer backlighting system is suitable for recent thin LCDs because of these advantages.

今後、マルチメディア社会の鍵となる技術としてはデジタル信号へのコンバージョン技術、高速情報通信、高品質ディスプレイがあげられる。そこでこの要求をみたすと考えられるデバイスの中で、高速通信を可能とすることが期待されるＰＯＦにつき、解説した。

ＧＩ型ＰＯの現状とその最新動向について述べる。

広伝送帯域、低損失なシングルモードガラス光ファイバーに相当する屈折率分布型ポリマー光ファイバーの光学特性について解説した。

今後、マルチメディア社会の鍵となる技術としてはデジタル信号へのコンバージョン技術、高速情報通信、高品質ディスプレイがあげられる。そこでこの要求を満たすと考えられるデバイス、高速通信が可能である、POFおよび光散乱ポリマー導光体バックライトにつき、その基礎開発から応用まで解説した。

全フッ素化ポリマー系ＧＩ型ＰＯＦに波長 650nm、850nm、1300nm の４種類の波長それぞれ 2.5Gbps の信号を乗せて伝送することにより、7.5Gbps、200m の伝送に成功したことを報告した。

アクセス系やLAN等システムの低価格性が期待されるネットワークにおいて実用化が期待される大口径、低損失、GI型POFに関して近年得られてきた材料検討による実験的なアプローチ、および理論的な解析を通した低損失化・広帯域か技術について述べる。

マルチメディアのためのフォトニクスポリマーとして伝送技術分野における、GI型POFの現状と、今後の展望、表示技術における光散乱ポリマー導光体バックライトシステムについて紹介する。

We demonstrate efficient and photostable laser action in graded index polymer fiber laser with organic dyes such as Rhodamine, Perylene and Pyrromethenes. Slope efficiency of 47% and output of 2.6 mJ have been obtained with a Rhodamine 6G-doped fiber laser. Moreover, we encapsulated rare ions to incorporate them into polymer matrices and studies spectroscopic properties of europium chelates in polymer hosts. Superfluorescent polymera fiber source based on Eu chlate-doped polymer optical fiber was demonstrated.

アクセス系やＬＡＮ等システムの低価格性が期待されるネットワークにおいて実用化が期待される大口径、低損失、ＧＩ型ＰＯＦに関して近年得られてきた材料検討による実験的なアプローチ、および理論的な解析を通した低損失化・広帯域化技術について述べる。

High-bandwidth and low-loss graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF) is introduced. With using a new polymer material, perfluorinated (PF) polymer, the attenuation of POF is lowered to around 40 dB/km, which enables 500 to 1000m transmission. More accurate analysis of the bandwidth characteristics of GI POF to realize the order of giga bit data transmission is quantitatively clarified in this paper. Furthermore, it was clarified that the stability of the refractive index profile and the attenuation under high temperature and high humidity atmosphere could be remarkably improved selecting the suitable dopant material.

History of POF development and recent breakthrough in technology of POF are reviewed, particularly focusing on the data transmission. Recent trend of the multimedia network has triggered the new application of POF as the high speed datacommunication medium. Possible bandwidth and transmission distance achieved by POF are quantitatively clarified. Based on such prospects, the high-speed network in future is proposed.

低損失、広帯域屈折率分布型ポリマー光ファイバーおよび、ポリマー光ファイバー増幅器の最近の進展を解説した。

Bandwidth characteristics and refractive index profile formation of the low-loss Graded-Index Polymer Optical Fiber were described. Low material dispersion of the perfluorinated polymer based GI POF provides higher bandwidth than the conventional silica based GI multimode fiber in visible to near infrared region.
