Expenditure of Personnel Costs for Principal Investigators (PIs) from Direct Costs of Competitive Research Funds (PI Personnel Cost System)

This system allows for the expenditure of personnel costs for Principal Investigators (hereinafter referred to as "PIs") from the direct costs of competitive research funds. This enables research institutions to utilize the financial resources previously allocated for PI personnel costs, at the institution's discretion, for initiatives that contribute to improving the PI's research performance and strengthening the institution's research capabilities.

Following the agreement on "Expenditure of Personnel Costs for Principal Investigators (PIs) from Direct Costs of Competitive Research Funds" decided on May 22, 2020, by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Research Promotion Bureau, Science and Technology Policy Bureau, Research and Development Bureau, and Higher Education Bureau, we hereby announce the utilization policy and results regarding the financial resources secured through this system as follows.

The secured financial resources will be used to provide allowances to PIs and cover associated necessary expenses in accordance with internal university regulations to improve the treatment of PIs. If a balance remains after utilizing the funds for the purpose of improving PI treatment, it may be used for improving the research environment of the university as a whole, securing diverse and excellent human resources, and other related purposes.
