I participated in a four-week advanced overseas practicum at the University of North Carolina Hospitals, where I had the opportunity to learn extensively not only about the Department of Pharmacy but also about the duties of pharmacists in various clinical departments, including the Cardiovascular ICU, the Neonatal ICU, and the TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) specialist team. In each clinical department, I participated in daily morning rounds, listened to patients at their bedside, and learned up close how each member of the team—including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists—actively engaged in discussions from their respective viewpoints to carefully determine the optimal treatment plan as a unified whole. What left the deepest impression on me was experiencing firsthand the active interprofessional collaboration in team-based care and the deep trust that other professionals have in pharmacists. On the other hand, I also became aware of the differences in the environment surrounding medical settings between Japan and the US, such as the medical insurance system and the scope of practice for pharmacists. This allowed me to objectively view the role required of pharmacists in Japan and to also recognize the excellent aspects of Japan's medical field.

Outside of the practicum, deepening my interactions with local pharmacy students and participating in volunteer activities for community health management and charity events are also unforgettable memories. I was inspired and motivated by discussing with the studious and highly ambitious pharmacy students at the University of North Carolina how we wanted to apply our pharmaceutical knowledge and experience to society in the future. This continues to be a great source of strength for me even after returning to Japan. Leveraging the invaluable experience gained from this advanced overseas practicum, I am striving every day to contribute to a better medical field in Japan.
