Diploma Policy

Educational Goals

Based on the policy for degree conferral and degree conferral (Diploma Policy) of Keio University University, our educational goals are to "cultivate a spirit of respect for life and humanity and develop judgment, problem-solving skills, and practical skills in nursing" and to "cultivate human resources who can create new nursing activities, contribute to the development of health, medical care, and welfare, systematize nursing science, and contribute to the development of nursing as jitsugaku (practical science) through mutual exchange with other academic fields."

In addition, students who have fulfilled the prescribed requirements set forth in the curriculum will be awarded a degree in Bachelor of Science in Nursing [B.S.N.].

Qualities and Competencies Goal (1): Foundational Human Skills

The ability to grow as a member of society with a well-balanced personality, along with a spirit of respect for life and humanity as a fundamental ethic. This also includes having a broad interest in society and the ability to meet, interact, and engage with people.

Qualities and Competencies Goal (2): Professional Expertise in Nursing and Medical Care

The foundational ability to lead in health, medical care, and welfare by anticipating the future of society and people's lives, and by creating new settings for nursing activities through the application of nursing knowledge and skills.

Qualities and Competencies Goal (3): Ability to Collaborate and Cooperate

The ability to act within teams composed of various professionals responding to advanced medical care, in order to achieve better practice while making the most of each other's expertise.

Qualities and Competencies Goal (4): Ability to Act Globally

The foundational ability to collaborate with medical professionals from other countries, which includes flexible thinking and initiative. This is based on a broad education that allows one to accurately grasp Japan's position and role from an international perspective.

Qualities and Competencies Goal (5): Ability to Effect Change

The critical ability to identify problems by maintaining an interest in current and potential events in nursing, medical care, and society, along with the ability to solve those problems and reform existing frameworks.

Curriculum Policy

Curriculum Organization

To cultivate the qualities and competencies set forth in the "Policy for Degree Conferral and degree conferral (Diploma Policy)," Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care systematically organizes a curriculum composed of information technology courses, natural language courses, and specialized education courses.

Curriculum Implementation

Under this curriculum organization, education is implemented through a combination of lectures, seminars, and practical training. To promote active learning, various educational methods are utilized, including interactive learning, flipped classrooms, group work, presentations, student debates, simulation-based education, and the case method.

Method for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The assessment of learning outcomes for the qualities and abilities to be acquired through this faculty's curriculum is conducted based on the concept of an assessment plan for the entire university. This assessment uses direct indicators based on the grading criteria established for each course, as well as quantitative, qualitative, direct, and indirect indicators, including various questionnaires and surveys.

In the assessment of learning outcomes, in addition to being based on the grading criteria established for each course, students will receive a failing grade for practical courses if their attendance is less than two-thirds for any course, regardless of the reason for absence.

Relationship between Quality and Ability Objectives and Educational Content

Quality and Ability Objective (1), "fundamental human skills," is primarily developed through courses in the Human Caring and Institutional and Social Systems fields of the Human and Social Sciences Area. It is also developed through courses in the Health Science and Pathophysiology field of the Health Sciences Area and the Fundamentals of Nursing field of the Nursing Science Area.

Quality and Ability Objective (2), "professional skills in nursing and medical care," is primarily developed through courses in the Fundamentals of Nursing, Maternal Nursing and Midwifery, Gerontological Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, Adult Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Home Care Nursing, and Community Health Nursing fields of the Nursing Science area, and the Health Science and Pathophysiology field of the Health Sciences area. It is also developed through courses in the Information Technology and Institutional and Social Systems fields of the Human and Social Sciences area.

Quality and Ability Objective (3), "ability to collaborate and coordinate," is primarily developed through courses in the Integrated Nursing and Medical Care field of the integrated area, and the Community Health Nursing and Global Health fields of the Nursing Science area. It is also developed through courses conducted jointly by medical-related faculties.

Quality and Ability Objective (4), "ability to be active internationally," is primarily developed through courses in the Global Health field of the Nursing Science area, and the Natural Languages and Institutional and Social Systems fields of the Human and Social Sciences area.

Quality and Ability Objective (5), "ability to effect change," is primarily developed through courses in the Integrated Nursing and Medical Care field of the integrated area. It is also developed through courses in fields such as Information Technology and Institutional and Social Systems in the Human and Social Sciences area, and Advanced Medical Care in the Health Sciences area.

Admission Policy

Ideal Student Profile

  • 1. Possess an interest in human health, life, and nursing, and strive to understand the pain and suffering of others.

  • 2. Respect others and seek to communicate and build relationships with people from different backgrounds, cultures, and with different values.

  • 3. Possess the ability to view things from multiple perspectives, identify underlying problems, devise solutions and countermeasures, and have the will and drive to implement them.

  • 4.Strive to accomplish what they have decided to do, learn from their failures, and seek personal growth.

  • 5. Desire for their actions to be of service to people and society, and seek to pursue the betterment of society.

Basic Selection Policy

To broadly accept such applicants, we conduct selections through (1) General Selection and (2) AO Admissions. Additionally, for those who have graduated from a university undergraduate program, we offer (3) a Second-Year Bachelor's Transfer Examination.

(1) General Selection

We assess the academic ability required for study in this department through examinations inforeign language (English); a choice of mathematics, chemistry, or biology; and a short essay. In the interview, we comprehensively evaluate the applicant's suitability for our ideal student profile.

(2) AO Admissions

In the open-application admissions by the Admissions Office (AO Admissions), we select applicants who have a strong desire to study at and be admitted to this faculty, and who possess sufficient motivation and ability to actively utilize the learning and research environment of our Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care to realize their post-admission goals and plans.

Under "Method A" of the AO Admissions, we select applicants who have actively engaged in a variety of activities, including academics, and who self-assess that their achievements fall under one or more of the following categories from A to G.

A. Have experience broadening their perspectives through domestic or international activities related to nursing, medical care, health, or welfare.

B. Have recognized achievements or accomplishments through social service or other community activities.

C. Excel in skills such as communication (in Japanese or a foreign language) or computer technology, and possess advanced qualifications or techniques.

D. Have gained social recognition through activities such as research, creative presentations, competitions, or athletics in various fields including academia, culture, arts, or sports.

E. Have an excellent academic record and maintain a creative and proactive attitude toward learning.

F. Are outstanding in both academics and character, and have earned recognition for actively taking on leadership roles in their community or high school.

G. Have initiated independent projects such as free research or self-directed study on a topic of interest and have achieved results.

Additionally, under "Method B" of the AO Admissions, we select applicants who have an excellent academic record in high school with an overall grade point average of 4.5 or higher.

After assessing the applicant's motivation and academic ability for study at this faculty through a document screening, we comprehensively evaluate their suitability for our ideal student profile in an interview.

(3) Second-Year Bachelor's Transfer Examination

The Second-Year Bachelor's Transfer Examination is offered with the hope that individuals who have graduated from a university undergraduate program will become leading professionals in nursing and medical care with broad perspectives and a rich sense of humanity by studying nursing based on their learning in other fields.

In the examination, we assess the applicant's culture, knowledge, and insight as a university graduate (bachelor's degree holder) through a short essay (including English-language materials). In conjunction with this, we judge their motivation and enthusiasm for nursing in an interview to make a comprehensive evaluation.
