Leveraging the Strengths of a Comprehensive University to Study Nursing Broadly
Keio University’s Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care leverages the unique interdisciplinary collaboration possible within a comprehensive university to create an environment where nursing can be studied from a broad perspective. Through the Inter-Professional Education Program with the School of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmacy, students learn team-based medical care in practice and engage in diverse field studies at the Shonan Fujisawa and Shinanomachi campuses. Through project learning and other approaches, we cultivate leaders in nursing and medical care who have creative ability and practical skills.
Key Features of the Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care
Learning That Leverages the Strengths of a Comprehensive University
Leveraging the strengths of a comprehensive university, the Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care actively invites faculty members from other faculties to enhance the specialization of its lectures and seminar courses. In addition, many students studying in the Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care actively take courses in other faculties, with the focus mainly on those in the Faculty of Policy Management and the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies.
International Learning
During the spring and summer breaks, the Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care provides its own international training program (elective course).
“Global Healthcare and Health Systems II (Overseas Training)” explores the U.K.’s healthcare, nursing, and welfare systems and care delivery in practice through lectures and visits to healthcare facilities.
In “Clinical Nursing Practice (Overseas Training),” students observe the latest nursing practices in U.S. clinical settings and learn about patient-centered care.
“Primary Healthcare and International Health II (Overseas Training)” explores the status of public health and health awareness of local communities in Laos. Students also learn about organizations such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), examining the relationship between recipient countries and donors, partnerships in development, sustainable development in the public health sector, and the potential for community-centered health promotion focusing mainly on primary healthcare.
In “International Nursing Practice I,” nursing students from South Korea, China, the U.K., and the U.S. participating in short-term study programs in Japan learn about global health and nursing challenges together with students from our faculty.
In “International Nursing Practice II,” students learn about nursing competencies from a global perspective through training at Eulji University in South Korea.
Thus, students gain an awareness of issues through experiencing healthcare overseas firsthand, early in their nursing and medical care studies. This becomes a driving force for them to explore the nature of nursing and medical care in Japan through their subsequent studies and practice.
Diverse Learning on Two Campuses
During the first and second years, students mainly study at the Shonan Fujisawa Campus. They acquire language skills, gain an understanding of humanity, the environment, and society and, while learning the fundamentals of nursing, they engage in clinical practice from an early stage. In addition, many students take courses in other faculties, including those in the Faculty of Policy Management and the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, broadening their perspectives through interactions with a wide variety of students.
In the third year, students are based at the Shinanomachi Campus, the location of Keio University Hospital, where they learn more deeply about providing nursing and medical care to patients suffering various conditions and engage in specialized clinical training.
In the fourth year, students enhance their learning through integrated courses while undergoing training in such areas as home nursing and nursing management. Additionally, students can delve deeper into topics of personal interest through project courses. If they choose the Public Health Nurse or Obstetric Nurse course, their study of these areas will be more specialized and they will undergo practical training in each of them.
