On Sunday, August 5, the Keio Senior High School Baseball Team played in the third match on the opening day of the 100th National High School Baseball Championship of Japan (commonly known as the "Summer Koshien") against Chuetsu High School from Niigata Prefecture, securing a 3-2 victory in a dramatic fashion in the bottom of the ninth inning.
One week later on August 12, the Keio team faced Kochi Shogyo High School from Kochi Prefecture in their second game. Despite a valiant effort, Keio fell short with a 6-12 loss, failing to advance to the third round.
For both games, seats in the cheering section of the first base side "Alps Stand" were sold out, and were filled with Keio supporters ranging from elementary school to university students, alumni, and faculty and staff members cheering on the Keio team, and each time Keio scored a run, Koshien Stadium erupted with a spirited rendition of the school fight song "Wakaki-chi."
The spectators from the Keio stands showed their praise for the Keio players, who brought their high school to the tournament for its 18th appearance and first in a decade, by sending them off with a generous round of applause. The feisty, never-say-die spirit the players showed during this commemorative 100th Summer Koshien will be remembered long after the end of the tournament.
