Competencies at Graduation

By graduation, students of the Keio University School of Medicine will have acquired Competencies I–VIII (abilities acquired through the completion of subjects).

I. Professionalism

At the time of graduation, students of the Keio University School of Medicine will be able to:

  1. Prioritize the interests of patients and act altruistically.

  2. Understand the principles of medical ethics and bioethics and act accordingly.

  3. Understand the significance of lifelong autonomous learning and put it into practice.

  4. Cultivate a spirit of independence and self-respect, perform self-management and self-evaluation, value their own physical and mental health, and act responsibly.

  5. Maintain an appearance and demeanor appropriate for a physician.

  6. Understand legal responsibilities and comply with norms.

  7. Understand the obligation to maintain the confidentiality of personal information and put it into practice.

  8. Recognize the potential for conflicts of interest and respond appropriately.

  9. Understand the fairness of medical resource allocation within the healthcare system.

  10. Be aware of being a member of society and reflect on their role as a physician.

  11. Acquire the education and culture appropriate for a physician.

II. Medical Knowledge

At the time of graduation, students of the Keio University School of Medicine will have acquired and be able to apply knowledge in basic medical sciences, social medicine, clinical medicine, and behavioral sciences, which form the foundation of clinical practice and research.

  1. Apply knowledge of basic medical sciences to the understanding of the etiology, pathology, and symptoms of diseases.

  2. Apply knowledge of social medicine to health and medical activities.

  3. Acquire knowledge of epidemiology, etiology, pathology, pathophysiology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis for high-frequency or important diseases, and provide appropriate clinical care. Examine evidence and apply it to clinical decision-making.

  4. Understand the behavioral and psychological characteristics of humans throughout their lifespan and provide appropriate responses and medical care.

III. Clinical Practice

  1. Appropriately take a patient's medical history.

  2. Appropriately perform physical examinations.

  3. Safely perform basic clinical procedures and emergency treatments.

  4. Interpret major test findings and utilize them in clinical practice.

  5. Systematically implement the diagnostic process based on clinical reasoning.

  6. Create medical records that reflect the process of clinical reasoning.

  7. Formulate patient care plans and disease management/prevention plans.

  8. Propose necessary medical care based on the evaluation of the patient's condition in collaboration with the patient, their family, and medical staff.

  9. Understand the importance of medical safety and infection control and put them into practice.

  10. Search for relevant information using literature and medical information databases to practice EBM.

IV. Communication

At the time of graduation, students of the Keio University School of Medicine will be able to:

  1. Consider the diversity of psychological and social backgrounds and living environments when communicating with patients and their families.

  2. Practice communication that demonstrates listening, empathy, and a supportive attitude with patients and their families.

  3. Understand the medical needs of society and the local community.

V. Practice of Team-Based Medicine

At the time of graduation, students of the Keio University School of Medicine will be able to:

  1. Collaborate to provide patient-centered care while understanding and respecting the roles of each member of the medical team.

  2. Make appropriate referrals and consultations to suitable facilities, specialized departments, and physicians for proper diagnosis, testing, and treatment.

  3. Collaborate with juniors and colleagues, providing constructive feedback while learning together.

VI. Contribution to Healthcare and Welfare

At the time of graduation, students of the Keio University School of Medicine will be able to:

  1. Understand and utilize healthcare delivery systems, including the insurance system.

  2. Understand community-based integrated care, emergency medicine, home medical care, and health promotion activities in the local community, and participate in those activities.

  3. Understand the local health, medical, nursing care, and welfare systems and utilize that knowledge in their own field of activity.

  4. Understand the significance and overview of comprehensive support activities for disease prevention and health promotion based on social determinants of health.

  5. Understand the roles of physicians, medical teams, and medical institutions required during natural disasters or pandemics, and prepare to contribute to society and the local community when they occur.

VII. Scientific Inquiry

At the time of graduation, students of the Keio University School of Medicine will be able to:

  1. Understand that research in medical sciences aims for the advancement of medical sciences and healthcare and the enhancement of patient benefits.

  2. Possess intellectual curiosity and explore a wide range of topics.

  3. Understand information and science technology and utilize them in medical care and learning.

  4. Search literature and medical information databases to obtain necessary scientific information.

  5. Engage in criticism and discussion based on scientific thinking.

  6. Identify problems in medical sciences and healthcare that cannot be addressed with existing knowledge and skills, and participate in the process of solving them.

  7. Exercise ethical consideration in the planning, implementation, and presentation of research.

  8. Accurately present the results of practical training and experiments.

  9. Select appropriate statistical methods and perform statistical analysis.

VIII. Qualities as a Global Medical Professional

At the time of graduation, students of the Keio University School of Medicine will be able to:

  1. Obtain and understand information on medical sciences and healthcare in English, and disseminate information in English.

  2. Understand health issues and disease prevention from a global perspective.
