Do you like history? I do.
I am currently studying English and American Literature, but as an undergraduate, I majored in Western History. It was there that I encountered Joseph Strutt, a lover of history who lived in England some 250 years ago. He pursued the study of his country’s history as a personal passion and published several books compiling his findings. When I read his work, I am struck by the remarkable power of human curiosity and passion. Strutt’s main profession was as an engraver, and he was by no means wealthy. He was not in a position to devote himself entirely to historical research. Even so, a simple love of history was enough to inspire him to write tens of thousands of words.
Today, drawing on the historical knowledge I gained as an undergraduate, I am exploring the legacy Strutt left behind from the perspective of literary studies. His works are notable for their many illustrations, which reflect his career as an engraver. By also drawing on insights from art history and iconography, I examine how Strutt shaped British views of history from the nineteenth century onward.
The Graduate School of Letters is a truly stimulating place to learn. Each graduate student brings a deep passion for a particular field; in that sense, it is a gathering of people who each love something deeply. Even themes that at first seem unrelated to your own research can lead to unexpected discoveries when you listen carefully. Conversely, when you share what you know, it may spark a new idea for someone else. The joy of learning from one another is something truly irreplaceable. I look forward to discovering what passions and perspectives you will bring.
