I specialize in the philosophy of perception—a branch of analytical philosophy, the dominant tradition in contemporary English-speaking philosophy. I am also interested in engaging with and helping to introduce the emerging field of analytical German idealism. Keio is widely regarded as one of Japan's leading institutions both for its philosophy program and for its tradition in analytical philosophy, and I feel very fortunate to be able to pursue my research here.
On a typical day, I spend most of my time reading papers in English (and German) in preparation for academic conferences and paper submissions. I also attend reading circles and study groups, where I work through texts and discuss research with friends and fellow students from Keio and other universities alike. For all of this, the electronic resources at the Keio media centers are indispensable. For better or worse, doing philosophy today revolves around reading papers published in English-language journals, and being able to download PDFs so easily through Keio's systems is a real advantage.
Since entering graduate school, I have attended seminars and courses taught by other faculty members, not just my supervisor's seminar. One of Keio's great strengths is the size of its faculty. Someone researching contemporary philosophy, for instance, can learn from multiple professors with deep expertise across the various fields of analytic philosophy. This is a huge advantage. I believe this is true not only of the Department of Philosophy and Ethics but across the other departments of the Keio Graduate School of Letters as well. To anyone pursuing graduate studies and thinking about their future career, I would wholeheartedly recommend the Keio University Graduate School of Letters. My hope is that Keio gives you everything you need to do the research you came here to pursue.
