Policy on Graduation Certification and Degree Conferral (Diploma Policy)
Educational Objectives
Based on the Policy on Graduation Certification and Degree Conferral (Diploma Policy) of Keio University, this program defines the following as the abilities students should acquire upon completion of the program. The objective is to cultivate individuals who, with this advanced specialized knowledge and these management skills, will contribute to the management of arts organizations both in Japan and internationally, as well as to cultural promotion. In addition, the degree of Master of Arts in Aesthetics [M.A. (Aesthetics)] will be conferred upon students who have fulfilled the prescribed requirements set forth in the curriculum.
Competency and Skill Objectives
Competency and Skill Objective (1): The ability to acquire specialized knowledge in practical work and research within arts management and related fields, and to use that knowledge to contribute to the refinement and development of arts organization management, the advancement of cultural policy, and cultural promotion in Japan and other countries.
Competency and Skill Objective (2): The ability to write a master's thesis on a specific topic within arts management or a related field, and furthermore, to possess comprehensive and in-depth specialized knowledge in areas related to the thesis topic and to contribute to practical work or research in those areas.
Competency and Skill Objective (3): The ability to contribute to the global community as a professional equipped with advanced management skills, by having acquired the specialized knowledge, logical thinking skills, analytical abilities, communication skills, and presentation skills needed to identify and solve important issues in arts management through business administration, policy science, and other fields, with a focus on arts and culture.
Competency and Skill Objective (4): The ability to understand the significance of studying the humanities in society and to achieve self-set goals and solve social problems using appropriate methods.
Policy on Curriculum Organization and Implementation (Curriculum Policy)
Curriculum Organization
To develop the competencies and skills outlined in the "Policy on Graduation Certification and Degree Conferral (Diploma Policy)," the Arts Management Program (Master's Program: Aesthetics) of the Major in Aesthetics and Art History, Graduate School of Letters, systematically organizes a curriculum consisting of special lecture courses and special lecture and seminar courses.
Curriculum Implementation
Under this curriculum structure, education is implemented through a combination of the following teaching methods.
(1) Students will take a group of lecture and seminar courses focusing on business administration, policy science, and other fields to develop the specialized knowledge, logical thinking skills, quantitative and qualitative analytical abilities, communication skills, and presentation skills necessary for practical work or research in the field of arts management. They must earn a specified number of credits from these courses.
(2) To facilitate the writing of the master's thesis, the designated academic advisor will provide primary individual supervision to deepen the student's knowledge of their research topic and develop advanced research and writing skills. Additionally, opportunities to receive guidance from multiple faculty members will be provided through events such as a mid-term master's thesis presentation session for the entire major.
(3) To develop advanced cross-cultural literacy through exposure to different environments, students are encouraged to participate in long-term study abroad programs at overseas graduate schools to obtain a master's degree, or short-term programs to earn credits or a professional diploma. These opportunities are available through study abroad programs offered by the Graduate School of Letters and the Keio University International Center, as well as various other internal and external study abroad systems. A limited number of credits earned through formal enrollment at an overseas graduate school may be counted toward the degree requirements. Furthermore, the Graduate School of Letters provides support for study abroad through its own unique assistance programs.
(4) To allow for more flexible course planning, including for students studying abroad, all courses are offered on a semester basis.
(5) To enable interdisciplinary research, students are permitted, up to a certain credit limit, to take courses offered by other graduate schools at Keio University, its affiliated Research Centers and Institutes, and other graduate schools affiliated with the Graduate School of Letters, and have them count toward their degree requirements.
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
The assessment of learning outcomes for the qualities and abilities to be acquired through the curriculum of this major is conducted based on the assessment plan for the entire Juku. This assessment uses direct indicators based on the grading criteria established for each course, as well as quantitative and qualitative, direct and indirect indicators, including various questionnaires and surveys. Specifically, these include (1) course evaluations by students and (2) data on leaves of absence and withdrawals.
The master's thesis review process involves several steps. In addition to the thesis title, a review committee, composed of a main examiner (generally the academic advisor) and two sub-examiners, must be approved by the Graduate School of Letters committee. Following a thesis review and an oral defense conducted by the review committee and related faculty members, the final results are deliberated and approved by the Graduate School of Letters committee.
Relationship between Objectives for Qualities and Abilities and Curriculum Content
Objective for Qualities and Abilities (1): The ability to acquire specialized knowledge of practical work and research in arts management and related fields, and to use that knowledge to contribute to the refinement and development of arts organization management, the development of cultural policy, and the promotion of culture in Japan and other countries.
→ Through Specialized Lecture and Specialized Seminar courses, students will steadily acquire specialized knowledge and research methods, as well as develop the language skills necessary to disseminate their research findings.
Objective for Qualities and Abilities (2): The ability to write a master's thesis on a specific topic in arts management or a related field, and to possess comprehensive and in-depth specialized knowledge in areas related to the thesis topic, enabling contributions to practical work or research in that field.
→ Through Specialized Lecture courses, Specialized Seminar courses, and individual thesis supervision, students will deepen their academic knowledge of the research area required for writing a master's thesis and develop advanced research and writing skills.
Objective for Qualities and Abilities (3): The ability to contribute to the international community as professionals with advanced management skills by taking an interest in arts and culture, identifying and solving important issues in arts management through management science, policy science, and other fields, and acquiring the necessary specialized knowledge, logical thinking, analytical skills, communication skills, and presentation skills.
→ By taking a combination of Specialized Lecture and Specialized Seminar courses, students will develop the ability to independently set and achieve their own research and learning objectives. To acquire advanced cross-cultural literacy, long- and short-term study abroad at overseas graduate schools is encouraged, utilizing study abroad programs offered by the Graduate School of Letters and the Keio University International Center, as well as various other internal and external study abroad systems.
Objective for Qualities and Abilities (4): The ability to understand the significance of studying the humanities in society and to achieve self-set goals and solve social problems using appropriate methods.
→ Students will be provided with opportunities to deepen their understanding of the humanities broadly by taking a combination of Specialized Lecture and Specialized Seminar courses. They may also take courses offered by other graduate schools and affiliated Research Centers and Institutes, as well as courses at other graduate schools affiliated with the Graduate School of Letters.
Admissions Policy
Profile of Desired Students
(1) Have at least three years of professional experience after graduating from university, through which they have gained a practical understanding of the realities of an organization's internal and external environments, deepened their understanding of their own area of expertise, and possess a foundational knowledge of arts management and related fields.
(2) Be able to independently formulate a research plan for their graduate studies, outlining what they wish to study and how they plan to conduct their research.
(3) Possess the critical awareness of relevant issues, specialized knowledge, and foundational English language skills necessary to pursue their research.
(4) Be actively considering their future career as a practitioner or researcher after completing the master's program.
Basic Selection Policy
To admit a wide range of such applicants, a selection process is conducted through a general entrance examination.
(1) General Entrance Examination
Selection is based on an examination consisting of two subjects (a specialized subject and a designated language) and an oral examination. A high level of academic ability is required, appropriate for the Arts Management field within the Major in Aesthetics and Art History at the Graduate School of Letters.
