Overview
Books contain more than just text and illustrations. In this course, we re-examine books as "material objects" shaped by human hands, skills, and culture. Using rare manuscripts and printed books from Japan, Dunhuang, Europe, and other parts of the world as clues, we will explore how books have been transmitted, changed, and given rise to new forms across cultures and eras. Together with leading instructors, let's decipher the hidden stories of the codex as it spread across national and cultural boundaries. This course was developed by Keio University in collaboration with the British Library and the University of Cambridge, and produced with the cooperation of the Dunhuang Academy.
