Exploring Culture, Society, and Human Nature

The Keio University Faculty of Letters is an academic research institution that explores every area of literature and the humanities. The wide-ranging research fields necessary to cover these areas transcend the conventional image of “the letters” and ventures into the concept of knowledge itself, encompassing scholarly learning, art, and science. It includes everything from the literary fields in a variety of languages to philosophy, history, library and information science, and the human and natural sciences.

An interdisciplinary academic system that offers courses across diverse and independent departments. Everything culminates in a collective body of knowledge through the “letter,” or human tongue.

Komonjoshitsu in the Faculty of Letters

The Komonjoshitsu houses a collection of approximately 50,000 to 60,000 items, primarily early modern documents from rural villages in the Kanto region. In addition to supporting research through access to these materials, it also organizes special exhibitions.
