Seminar Outline
The percentage of female students in Japanese universities now exceeds 45 percent, and the gender ratio in higher education is approaching parity. However, the percentage of women on the boards of listed companies is just over 10 percent, which remains low compared to Western countries such as the United States, France, and Sweden (30–45 percent) and Asian countries like Singapore and the Philippines (35–50 percent). What is the cause of this phenomenon? How should we promote the utilization of women's abilities for Japan's future growth strategy? What can universities, which should be nurturing and producing human resources, do to increase the ratio of women? Gender issues were discussed in a panel discussion featuring panelists, primarily faculty members from the Faculty of Science and Technology.
