Five works by students of Associate Prof. Fujii’s x-Music Lab have been accepted for the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) 2026. Started in 2001, NIME gathers researchers and musicians from around the world to share and present innovations in musical interface design.

The five submissions—two performances and one installation in the Music category, and two papers in the Paper category—were presented, performed, and exhibited at this year’s conference in London, UK. Of these, the performance piece “parasitic” earned an honorable mention as an outstanding work in the Music category.

For the third consecutive year, multiple works by members of the x-Music Lab have been selected from a competitive global pool. Full coverage of their achievement at NIME 2025 is available in Japanese: 藤井研究室の学生らの3作品がNIME 2025に採択、2作品が「Highly Commended」に選出 (Three Fujii Lab Submissions Accepted for NIME 2025; Two Earn “Highly Commended”).

“I feel deeply privileged to receive an honorable mention at NIME 2026,” noted Kikuchi, the lead author of “parasitic.” “This piece was created as my graduation project during my undergraduate studies. I hit a wall several times along the way, but thanks to the support of many people, I was able to bring the work to fruition.

I am deeply grateful to my advisors at the x-Music Lab, Fujii-sensei, Uozumi-sensei, and Kobayashi-sensei for their dedicated guidance. I also wish to express my sincere thanks to Shinnosuke Hirose and Risako Shibata for their collaboration in the performance and to all the Lab members who provided invaluable feedback on the project.”
