Asuka Ishii, a fourth-year student in the Faculty of Policy Management and a member of Associate Professor Masashi Nakatani's lab (Faculty of Environment and Information Studies), and Kazuki Nagata, a fourth-year student in the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies at the time of the award and a member of Professor Akira Wakita's lab (Faculty of Environment and Information Studies), had their work "*Photos are for illustrative purposes only" selected as a finalist in the Art & New Media Division of the 29th Campus Genius Contest (CGC).

The Campus Genius Contest is a competition that invites students to submit works on any theme and in any genre—including media art, animation, video, games, performance, gadgets, and contemporary art—and recognizes outstanding entries.

For this 29th contest, three new divisions were established: the Art & New Media Division, the Video & Animation Division, and the Game & Interaction Division. Ishii and Nagata's work, "*Photos are for illustrative purposes only," was selected as a finalist in the Art & New Media Division.

Comments from the Award Winners

It is a great honor to have been selected as a finalist in the Campus Genius Contest.

This work involves taking photographs that closely resemble AI-generated images, contrasting them, and uploading them to the internet. We created this piece while contemplating themes such as images on the internet, biases created by datasets, the desire for consumption, and the origin of placeness. The online exhibition of award-winning works will be held until July 2024, and we would be delighted if you would view it. In receiving this award, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone in our laboratories and all parties involved for their guidance on this project.
