A paper by Yuto Kunitake, a third-year student in the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies and a member of the Fumio Shimpo Laboratory, was accepted at the 8th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals.
The 8th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum 2023) is a policy conference organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs to discuss the relationship between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and science and technology. This year, for its eighth session, a call for Science-Policy Briefs was issued on the following three themes:
(a) Rapidly emerging frontier technologies and emerging science issues and sustainable development
(b) Lessons for improving the science-policy-society interfaces
(c) Review of progress in science, technology and innovation, and looking ahead to 2030 and beyond
The review process, which includes peer review, was conducted by the UN Inter-agency Task Team and a group of 10 experts appointed by the UN Secretary-General. For 2023, approximately 100 briefs were selected from a large number of submissions. The accepted Science-Policy Briefs will be used in UN policy deliberations and will provide the perspectives of scientists, engineers, and innovators to the High-Level Political Forum in July and the SDG Summit in September.
Yuto Kunitake's paper, "The Potential of Virtual Reality for the SDGs: Infrastructure Development through Content and Cultural Policies," explores the interaction between virtual reality and the SDGs from the perspective of cultural and content policies. It was accepted due to its significance for both research and policy.

Comment from Yuto Kunitake
I am deeply honored that my paper was accepted in this manner for a United Nations policy conference. I am also delighted that the research and policy significance of my report—which suggests that the diverse content culture of VR spaces can contribute to promoting the SDGs—was recognized. I will continue to devote myself to my research activities with an international perspective.
