At the 15th Motor Control Meeting, Takuya Deriha, a first-year student in the Doctoral Programs at the Graduate School of Media and Governance (from the Junichi Ushiyama Laboratory), won the "Young Investigator Award."

The Motor Control Meeting is an academic conference where participants from various fields such as physiology, biology, engineering, medical sciences, rehabilitation, and sports science, who are researching motor control mechanisms throughout Japan, gather to report and discuss their respective research findings. It is held once a year with the keywords "fostering young researchers" and "interdisciplinarity."

The "Young Investigator Award" was established to encourage the research of outstanding young researchers in the field of motor control and to further vitalize the Motor Control Meeting. It is selected from general presentations given by lead authors who are researchers within five years of obtaining their doctoral degree (including those who have not yet obtained one). It is a remarkable achievement for a first-year doctoral student to receive this award, especially among numerous postdoctoral researchers.

(Left) Associate Professor Ushiyama, (Right) Mr. Deriha

I am sincerely delighted to receive such a wonderful award. The research I reported on this time started from scratch in the lab, so I was anxious about how it would be evaluated by external researchers. Therefore, receiving this award at this conference, where top-tier researchers gather, has given me great confidence and is a very significant event for me. When I first entered university, I was in the Faculty of Science and Technology, but I couldn't find what I wanted to do and transferred to SFC. SFC is the best environment, one that greatly encourages trial and error. After various experiences, I joined the Junichi Ushiyama Laboratory, and I am now able to immerse myself in neuroscience research. I cannot thank SFC and the Ushiyama Lab enough for accepting me and my experiences. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to my lab members, who are the cornerstone of my research through daily discussions; to the many faculty and administrative staff; and above all, to Professor Ushiyama, who has patiently supported my sometimes erratic research. I will continue to advance this research to achieve even greater results.
