Manami Ishii (then a fourth-year student in the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies) won the Grand Prize at the "Kaigo (Nursing Care) Digital Hackathon 2020 in Sapporo" of the Wakamono Innovation Network 2020, announced in February 2021.

This hackathon was conducted in mixed teams of students ranging from high school to graduate school. The goal was to solve issues related to nursing care by utilizing digital technology while collaborating with teammates from different fields. In response to the hackathon's theme, "Solve the problems of care recipients, their families, and care staff in home and residential facilities with the power of digital and design," Ishii's group developed "Madoka," an application designed to improve the work efficiency of care managers. The event was also featured in the Kaigo Shimbun (Nursing Care Newspaper) on March 4, 2021.

Some of the features of "Madoka" are as follows:

・AI identifies content from chat and voice functions, and information related to dates and times is automatically reflected in the schedule.

・Contact information related to the patient (such as their primary care physician) is displayed as a correlation diagram.

The judging criteria were scored on the following six items:

・Appropriateness of the problem definition

・Novelty of the proposal

・Quality of implementation & technology

・Refinement through on-site hearings and implementation

・Feasibility of implementation in a nursing care setting

・Completeness of the presentation

I am very honored to have received the Grand Prize at the "Kaigo (Nursing Care) Digital Hackathon 2020 in Sapporo." This hackathon is usually held offline, which would have made it difficult for me to participate. However, this year it was held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed me to join. It was challenging to work online with people I had just met, but I am happy that we were able to achieve this result by collaborating with my teammates for about six months, from conducting surveys and selecting a problem to implementing screen transitions. I would like to continue working towards the release of this application in the future.
