The Keio Research Institute at SFC at Keio University has launched "S-face," a website to introduce its researchers to a global audience.
"S-face" is a series of articles that introduces researchers from multiple perspectives through three different types of media: a website (English), videos (English), and a newsletter (English/Japanese).
Vol. 26 features Professor Hiroya Tanaka of the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies.
In recent years, an environment has emerged where individuals can use machine tools such as 3D printers, 3D scanners, and laser cutters, which were previously tools for specialists.
This "personal fabrication" movement, which began around 2010, holds the potential to fundamentally transform our society of mass production, mass consumption, and mass waste.
Now that machine tools are connected to networks and digital design data is widely distributed, making it possible for necessary items to be created by the people who need them, in the place, at the time, and in the quantity required, what kind of future lies ahead?
Professor Hiroya Tanaka is researching the future evolution of digital fabrication technology from the dual perspectives of technological development and social application.
