The SFC Open Research Forum (ORF) 2017 was held over two days, on Wednesday, November 22 and Thursday, November 23 (national holiday), at Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi.

ORF is held annually in November with the aim of widely showcasing the advanced research initiatives of the Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC) to the public, returning its results (seeds) to society, and further developing industry-academia-government collaboration.

The theme for 2017 was "LAB IS THE MESSAGE: The Spirit of Experimentation," embodying the spirit of tackling various situations with the attitude, "If it doesn't exist, create it." Exhibitions and sessions were held based on this theme.

This year, the 22nd ORF, featured an exhibition space constructed with large wooden easels. In a venue filled with a sense of openness and the scent of wood, unique research activities were introduced to visitors.

At the exhibition booths in the Tokyo Midtown East B1F Hall, approximately 220 projects from 108 exhibiting organizations—a significant increase from last year—were presented, fostering a lively and broad exchange of knowledge.

At the exhibition venue, research presentations on diverse themes such as manufacturing, architecture, and communication were given, attracting many visitors and creating a bustling atmosphere.

Additionally, at the Conference on the 4th floor and the International Design Liaison Center on the 5th floor of Tokyo Midtown Tower, approximately 40 sessions were held. These included sponsor sessions by corporate partners and sessions by research labs, featuring prominent speakers from various fields such as business, government, and sports. Heated discussions unfolded, and the social gatherings were also lively. The "Fab 3D Contest 2017" awards ceremony was also held, attracting a large audience from a wide range of age groups.
