The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has announced the recipients of the FY2017 Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of MEXT. From SFC, Guest Professor Hideyuki Tokuda of the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, Associate Professor Keisuke Uehara of the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, and Professor Michiko Watanabe of the Graduate School of Health Management have received the Prize for Science and Technology.
Guest Professor Tokuda was awarded for his "Research on OS Platform Technology and Ubiquitous Computing Technology," which was recognized as a technology that will contribute to building social infrastructure and creating services in the future super-smart society.
Associate Professor Uehara received the award for a joint research project with five other researchers, including those from the University of Electro-Communications, on the "Dissemination and Awareness-Raising of Evaluation Methods for Information Education." He was recognized for his contribution to promoting significant changes in information education.
Professor Watanabe received the award for a joint research project with five other researchers, including those from the Institute of Statistical Mathematics of the Research Organization of Information and Systems, on the "Dissemination and Awareness-Raising of Statistical Data Analysis and Thinking Skills." She was recognized for her contribution to promoting the development of statistical thinking skills in a society that utilizes big data and open data.
Comment from Guest Professor Hideyuki Tokuda
I am deeply honored to receive such a prestigious Prize for Science and Technology from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, and Science and Technology. I received this award for my research achievements in ubiquitous computing technologies, including real-time threads for real-time OS, synchronization/communication models, real-time toolsets, smart spaces, and smart devices, with a recommendation from the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ). I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the selection committee for their evaluation, the IPSJ, and all my fellow researchers with whom I have collaborated for many years. These technologies are crucial for building cyber-physical systems and context-aware IoT services in the coming age of IoT/Big Data/AI, and I hope to contribute, in my small way, to their further development.
Comment from Associate Professor Keisuke Uehara
I am extremely honored to receive such an award. This commendation is the result of activities with many people related to primary and secondary information education, the development of evaluation methods for educational outcomes, and the verification of these methods. I believe this is an award received by everyone involved. In the coming era, the field of information will be indispensable, and I believe its education is extremely important. I intend to continue to strive for the development of this field.
Comment from Professor Michiko Watanabe
I am very honored to receive this highly prestigious award. This award recognizes over a decade of activities with many people at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics of the Research Organization of Information and Systems and the Japan Statistical Society's Committee on Statistical Education, among others. These activities include various projects to foster statistical thinking skills for working adults and school teachers, as well as the creation and operation of educational material websites, represented by "Kagaku no Dogubako (Toolbox for Science)" (funded by JST). I would like to once again express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has cooperated with me. The world surrounding statistics, including analytical theories, applications, and educational methodologies themselves, is evolving rapidly. I will continue to do my best to contribute to the dissemination and awareness-raising of statistics education.
