The Kenji Watanabe Laboratory and the Yoshinori Iimori Laboratory at the Keio Research Institute at SFC (located in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture; Director: Yoshinori Iimori; hereinafter "Keio Research Institute at SFC"), Keio University, are conducting a commissioned research project from JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) RISTEX (Research Institute of Science and Technology for Society) titled "Formation and Effectiveness Verification of a Multi-generational Co-creative Community to Address Mibyo." This project targets Yugawara Town, Ashigarashimo District, Kanagawa Prefecture, and is being advanced in cooperation with Kanagawa Prefecture's "Improvement of Mibyo" initiative.
The improvement of mibyo is an issue that should be addressed throughout one's life, and we believe it is important to foster strong awareness from school age.
As part of various initiatives, health education for elementary school students is being conducted by university students at Yugawara Municipal Todai Fukuura Elementary School. This education aims to reduce picky eating among elementary school students and prevent future metabolic syndrome by teaching them to enjoy the natural flavors of food, such as vegetables, by chewing them well. The project is designed for the elementary school students who learn these lessons to share them with the university students, as well as with kindergarteners and their parents, so that they may become future leaders in the improvement of mibyo.
About the Dietary Education for Elementary School Students by University Students
Seven students from the Faculty of Policy Management and the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies at Keio University will give an easy-to-understand talk to 20 fifth-grade students at Yugawara Municipal Todai Fukuura Elementary School. This session, as part of their dietary education, will help them realize the importance of chewing through hands-on experience. Although children today tend to have weaker chewing abilities, the goal is to help them understand the natural flavors of food by chewing well, which will enable them to eat without being picky.
