The Katsuhiko Ogawa Lab at the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies has been conducting media design related to railway services for 10 years. In the spring semester of 2015, they began a new initiative: media design to promote the stores in the "CIAL Sakuragicho" shopping center at Sakuragicho Station. In this collaborative research project, students from the lab proposed a concept where customers can enjoy creating their own custom bento for lunch by beautifully arranging their favorite side dishes, made possible by standardizing the packaging from different stores.

Based on this proposal, a project team including members from JR East and CIAL conducted studies and prototype testing. As a result, a new bento service will be offered on a trial basis at "CIAL Sakuragicho" this July, featuring 87 types of side dishes from 9 stores, all available in standardized packaging.
