The Faculty of Policy Management and the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies at Keio University will hold a two-day, one-night workshop, the "SFC Camp for Designing the Future (Residential)," at the Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC). In addition, as part of this camp, the "Camp for Designing the Future Follow-up Program" will also be launched. This program, centered on long-term training at the Faculty of Policy Management and Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, is scheduled to run from the end of the camp until March 2017.

What is the Camp for Designing the Future?

Since 2011, the Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC) has been holding the "Camp for Designing the Future" for current high school students. The Camp for Designing the Future is an event held annually during the summer vacation period that allows high school students to experience the essence of intellectual activity at a university—sharing a special time through free and open discussions. It is a program designed to help them gain a deeper understanding of SFC's educational and research philosophy.

High school students apply for workshops that interest them and, together with SFC faculty and current students, spend a full day actively using both their minds and bodies to design the "future" and experientially reflect on the "ability to execute" that will connect to that future. The "camp" here is not simply "camping in the field" but an "environment" for learning the importance of utilizing one's abilities and experience on-site and linking creativity and ingenuity to action.

In 2016, four workshops will be held on Monday, August 1, and the first-ever residential workshop for the Camp for Designing the Future will be held from Wednesday, August 24 to Thursday, August 25.

For details on individual workshops and how to apply, please see here .

The application deadline is noon on Monday, June 13.

・Dates: Wednesday, August 24–Thursday, August 25 (two days, one night)

・Venue: Keio University Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC)

・(Accommodation) Keio University Miraisozojuku (Institute for Designing the Future) SBC Residential Building 1

・Participation Fee: Approximately 7,000 yen (planned, includes accommodation, meals, insurance, etc.)

By making the Camp for Designing the Future (Residential) a two-day, one-night program on campus, it becomes possible to hold more intensive workshops and foster deeper interaction. Additionally, the more relaxed schedule will provide more opportunities than ever for students from outside the Tokyo metropolitan area to participate.

The Camp for Designing the Future (Residential) and the Camp for Designing the Future Follow-up Program are not so-called "affiliated school" type high school-university collaboration programs, such as course credit systems at universities or credit recognition systems at high schools. Instead, they aim to be programs that develop each student's abilities while emphasizing their autonomy and fostering a strong connection with the high school students themselves. They are project-based, internship-style high school-university collaboration programs, and it is hoped that they will evolve into more advanced high school-university internship programs in the future.

Those who receive an excellence award at the Camp for Designing the Future (Residential) will be eligible to participate in the Follow-up Program.

In conjunction with the Camp for Designing the Future (Residential), the Faculty of Policy Management and the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies will also launch the "Camp for Designing the Future Follow-up Program" for the workshop award winners. In this program, the faculty members who led the workshops will provide ongoing mentoring. Participants will join ongoing educational and research projects as interns and receive guidance and advice from university faculty for approximately half a year. This allows them to experience the essence of intellectual activity at a university, and furthermore, SFC's problem-finding and problem-solving style of education, in a more realistic and long-term manner.

The program details for the 2016 academic year are as follows. More detailed information will be announced during the Camp for Designing the Future (Residential) workshop.

・The program runs from the end of the camp until March of the following year. The research groups (seminars) available for participation are those of the faculty members who led the workshops at the Camp for Designing the Future (Residential).

・Participants, in consultation with their supervising faculty member, will define a project (task) to be carried out during the internship period.

・Participants can receive project mentoring (guidance and advice) as needed, either face-to-face or via teleconference, using weekends and other available times.

・By participating in research project training camps during long school vacations, participants can interact with researchers and students from both within and outside Keio University (two camps are planned during the program, either using SFC facilities or involving regional fieldwork).

・Participants will report on their projects at a research project presentation event scheduled to be held around Golden Week in 2017.

・Those who complete the program will be awarded a certificate of completion.

・Participants will be expected to cover the actual costs of the research project training camps as a participation fee (approximately 7,000 yen when using SFC facilities).
