Yuri Toyama, a first-year student at the Faculty of Policy Management, won the championship at the 2015 Spring Women's Tournament hosted by the Kanto Student Shogi Association, held at Meiji University on Saturday, May 17.

The Kanto Student Shogi Association is composed of shogi clubs and groups from over 20 universities in the Kanto region, and it holds team and individual tournaments throughout the year. The women's tournament is held twice a year, in spring and fall, and Ms. Toyama brilliantly won the championship in her very first appearance. Great things are expected from her in the future.

A Comment from Yuri Toyama

Until high school, I lived in Aichi Prefecture, so all I knew was that the level of play in the Kanto region was high. I was surprised by the large number of participants when I entered the venue on the day of the tournament. There were many players I recognized from national tournaments in my high school days, and my first opponent was very strong, which made for a tough match. However, I ended up winning all four of my matches. I felt I couldn't lose for the sake of the club members who came to support me, so I am very happy to have won the championship in my first-ever appearance.
