For three weeks from Monday, May 11 to Friday, May 29, 2015, fifteen students from the Doctoral Programs at the State University of Makassar, Indonesia, are staying at SFC as visiting research students to conduct their respective research. Many of them are local public officials working in Makassar City or South Sulawesi Province, where Makassar is located. Upon the recommendation of their respective local governments, they have taken a leave of absence to pursue research in public administration in the Doctoral Programs.
The Malay-Indonesian Language Laboratory (led by Professor Toru Nomura of the Faculty of Policy Management) and the Islamic Studies Laboratory of the Keio Research Institute at SFC (led by Professor Atsushi Okuda of the Faculty of Policy Management) served as the host organizations, making their visit to Japan as visiting research students possible. During their three-week stay, they will use the materials and databases of the Media Center to write their English-language papers, a requirement for obtaining their doctoral degrees. They also participated as guest speakers in various Malay-Indonesian language classes at SFC, giving lectures to the students in those classes about Indonesia, Sulawesi, and the Makassar region.
As there are few opportunities to encounter the Indonesian language in Japan, this is a great opportunity for SFC students to experience authentic Indonesian. We hope to increase such exchange programs in the future.
