The Kato, Nagano, and Mizutori Laboratories, together with the Keio Research Institute at SFC, the Keio SFC Academic Society, and ABLE (Mutsumi Imai Laboratory at Keio University and Tokyo Community School), will hold a symposium on expertise in sports under the theme of "Effort or Talent?" On the occasion of the visit to Japan by Dr. Ericsson, a professor at Florida State University and a leading expert in expertise research, the symposium will feature leading figures from the Japanese sports world, such as Dai Tamesue and Ai Sugiyama.

Based on the theories of Dr. Ericsson, who has long studied "Deliberate Practice"—a concept that has garnered attention in the process of skill acquisition in various fields (sports, music, medical sciences, chess, etc.)—a panel discussion is planned. The discussion will feature speakers from various perspectives, including athletes, coaches, and researchers. It will address questions such as "Is it talent or effort that is necessary to become a top athlete who can compete on the world stage?" and "What should the Japanese sports world be like leading up to 2020?" The discussion will consider not only the theoretical framework of the research but also its practical applications.
