2014.02.20
We are pleased to announce that XD Exhibition 2014, "Image Formation: An Exhibition of Comparison, Overlapping, and Connection," a student-led exhibition by laboratories of the X-Design Program at the Keio University Graduate School of Media and Governance, will be held for two days on Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2 at Catalyst BA on the 8th floor of Futako-Tamagawa Rise Office.
In the X-Design Program, laboratories covering a wide range of fields—including product design, media art, interfaces, digital fabrication, fieldwork, music, and video—come together. Here, labs and students influence and inspire one another, actively engaging in research and creative work that transcends the boundaries of existing disciplines.
XD Exhibition 2014 will feature an exhibition of over 30 works by multiple research groups from the program, as well as four talk sessions with distinguished guests active in various fields.
For this year's 6th exhibition, we have chosen the theme of "Image Formation" (Ketsuzō), a technical term from optics.
This term, which means "to form an image through a lens or mirror," has been given a dual meaning for this event.
The first meaning refers to the works themselves as "images" formed by students from diverse backgrounds through their connections with various fields.
The second meaning embodies our hope that visitors to the exhibition will form new "images" of their own by experiencing the perspectives and visions presented in each work.
Through the exhibition and talk sessions, we aim to create a space where exhibitors and visitors alike can "compare, overlap, and connect" various "images"—from perspectives on everyday objects to visions for the future.

Comment from Associate Professor Yasuaki Kakehi
The XD Exhibition is planned each year by students from the design-focused laboratories at SFC known as X-Design, and this year's program is once again packed with exhibitions, talk sessions, and workshops. The design researched in the X-Design Program does not fit neatly into any existing category; while some projects brilliantly solve problems, many others pose new questions. Furthermore, every initiative emphasizes going beyond mere conceptual proposals to sublimate ideas into tangible outputs, such as physical objects and systems. I encourage you to come and experience this culmination of this year's design work from SFC, which has been "brought into focus" by moving back and forth between natural, artificial, and design languages.
