Professor Murai

(c) Takanobu Kawazu. Jun Murai, Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies (and Professor at the same faculty), has been inducted into the 2013 Internet Hall of Fame by the Internet Society (ISOC; headquarters near Washington, D.C., USA, and in Geneva, Switzerland). Previous inductees to the Internet Hall of Fame include Dr. Vinton Cerf, a co-father of TCP/IP and an honorary doctorate recipient from Keio Juku, and Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web. Inductees are selected in three categories: "Pioneers," "Innovators," and "Global Connectors." Dean Murai was inducted into the "Pioneers" category, which recognizes individuals who played a key role in the early development of the internet, making him the first Japanese person to receive this honor.

Dean Murai is known as the "father of the internet" in Japan and the "Internet Samurai" abroad. In 1984, he established the Japan University UNIX Network (JUNET), connecting academic institutions with Japan's first computer network. In 1988, he launched the WIDE Project, a Japanese internet research consortium. His numerous contributions to the global internet led to his induction into the "Pioneers" category.

In 2005, he received the Jonathan B. Postel Service Award from the Internet Society (ISOC) for his contributions to spreading the internet in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2011, he received the IEEE Internet Award.
